Topic: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Let me invite everyone to join us at the US Open Bracket Challenge.  Google it.  Sign up and join our league, "Obi Wan Cannoli."

For those of us who live in one of the original 48 states or DC, we could win a trip for two to the US Open.  For the rest of the world, there will be the joy of knowing you kicked the butt of the dumb American who won.  Now THAT's priceless!

As far as I can tell, only 6 of the 35 players in the Cannoli league are GSFT players.  Come on, folks!  Join the fun.  Win a trip.  Join our league, and please identify yourself as a GSFT person when you do.

Best of luck, everybody!  Have a great US Open!

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

DAY ONE CANNOLI REPORT

Before the start of play, the Obi Wan Canonli league was up to 69 players.  After they got a look at how well they started, 15 more players joined us, bringing the total to 84, by far the largest league at the US Open Bracket Challenge!!!  Those who joined late with high scores demonstrated bad form in that regard, but it makes the challenge even more intense.

In spite of the guys with high scores coming in, our own GUGA IS ALONE IN FIRST PLACEwith 42 total points.  He went 19-5 in his men's bracket (tied for 480th out of 11,008) and 23-4 in his women's bracket -- good enough to tie for first in our league and GUGA is tied for 20th out of 7,641 in the women's bracket!!!
Great start, Guga!
We bow down in awe of your knowledge of obscure women players!

In addition to Guga's great showing, ARVIS is tied for 10th in the league, going 20-4 in his men's bracket and 18-9 in his women's bracket.  ARVIS and DON are tied for 70th out of 11,008 in the men's bracket along with 4 others in the league.  Amazingly, this is only good enough for 2nd as another player is a point ahead, tied for 10th out of 11,008!!!  I told you some people with really good scores joined, didn't I?

In the combined, CrossCourt and Don are a point behind Arvis, tied for 23rd in the league.  Tono is a point further back, tied for 39th.  Sadly, Wolmas did not get his brackets picked in time.  Since he got started, you might think he is in the process of setting an all time low that will stand forever, but that would be unfair.  The poor guy was without power and gets a free pass on this one.

CONGRATULATIONS ON AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY THE YODA CUP CREW ON DAY ONE OF THE US OPEN!!!

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Good stats there Don smile unfortunately the Cannoli has lost some of it's "gloss" for me with all these GLORY HUNTERS coming in after the tournament started....my only hope now is that ONE of us kick their butts and show them up for the show stealers they are!
I believe you shouldn't be allowed to join a bracket once the pick deadline has closed!
I'm guessing others will join if they do well too so it's almost like whats the point setting up a league in the first place.....SIGH! hmm

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Some bozo came in just this morning and now Guga is tied for first.  I admit it's frustrating, but that's the problem with public leagues at any of these sites.  People can come and go as they please.  In retrospect, maybe I should have made the league private, but I didn't anticipate this flood of participants.

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

LOL!  Great stuff Don!

Yeah, I'm thinking we should definitely do a Private group next year just for our happy little GSFT family. smile
But there's something to be said about competing in the largest group in the competition!

-Arvis

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Agreed.  I was looking forward to competing in a large group.  But I would have preferred it greatly if the league membership closed when the tourney started.

I see that as a design flaw, actually.  I think I'll send them a note about it, but I doubt they'll change anything.

...Sent them a nice note asking them to consider changing it so that league membership would close when the picks close.  Made Tono's nice "defeats the purpose of leagues" argument.  We'll see whether they respond.

If you agree, please send them a note through "Contact Us" at the top of the Cannoli page to the effect that you'd like to see leagues close when picks do.  Thanks!

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

SWEET VICTORY!!!

Here, in its entirety, is the response I received from the US Open Bracket Challenge operators:

You make a good point and the group software will be updated shortly to not allow you to join/leave/invite in Public groups after the event start date.  You will still be able to do all of this for Private groups.

There we go, folks!  The latecomer glory hog is a problem we will never have in the Cannoli again, Tono, my man!!!

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Try to propose them to become international with prizes.Maybe they will consider it in the future.

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

That was my very first suggestion to them, Guga.  You should suggest that yourself.  Maybe we all should.

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

I will send them a suggestion about prizes.I just toth that there is a bigger chance that they will listen to you as an American.Apriciate that you have sent them that suggestion Don.If only Tono was a litle more active the sky would be the limit for us.But I guess he has a full hands with defending something that can not be defended, the Yoda cup! big_smile Mr.Former! LMAO!

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

LOL....hey c'mon now Guga I have been more than active arranging our Vader league on FTT...I can send in the same prize suggestion to the USTA bracket challenge if you want me to but it appears Don is doing a GREAT job in helping them with improvements etc....so tell me in what way do you want me to be more active???? Or are you just trying to get under my skin a little Dragan wink lol

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

DAY TWO CANNOLI REPORT

GUGA continues to roll along atop the CANNOLI competitor list, fighting for the lead with a latecomer glory hog wannabe.  At the moment, GUGA IS SECOND IN THE LEAGUE with 39-9 in his men's bracket and 52-12 in his women's bracket.  GUGA and DON are tied for 164th out of 11,008 in the men's bracket.  GUGA is 13th out of 7,641 in the women's bracket.  That's good for a tie for 3rd in the league in the men's and 2nd in the league in the women's.  The interloper who's one point ahead of Guga in the combined is two points ahead of him in the women's and is 2nd overall!  Guga has a comfortable 4 point lead over the three guys tied for 3rd in the league.  GET 'EM, GUGA!

Meanwhile, ARVIS is rising to the top steadily.  Currently ARVIS is tied for 6th in the league with 41-7 in his men's bracket and 45-19 in his women's bracket.  ARVIS is alone in 1st in the league and 10th out of 11,008 in the men's bracket!!!

Just as Guga is 5 points ahead of Arvis, so is Arvis 5 points ahead of CrossCourt and Don, who are tied for 24th in the league.  Tono is bringing up the rear at the moment, looking for a place to ditch the spoon, tied for 54th another 3 points back!  Isn't THAT refreshingly different???

CONGRATULATIONS to GUGA & ARVIS for an OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE!!!
ROCK ON, GENTLEMEN!!!

I'm banking on making a late charge in the Cannoli...I'm obviously not gonna win it but don't wanna be left holding the "Wooden Spoon" either wink

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Yeah, my women's bracket is completely busted now, thanks to Li.  I don't understand what happened.  She made it to the semis in New Haven and was looking just fine!  Where did 54 UEs come from? T_T

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

I think the amazing consistency of the top 5 or 6 men and Serena give us the mistaken idea that being consistent is what we can and should expect from all tennis players.  The truth is, humans are usually inconsistent in athletic endeavors, among other things -- even extremely talented humans doing things they're very good at.  It is a rare athlete who can overcome his or her natural tendency to inconsistency, especially if they are trying to be aggressive, which is essential at the top of any game.

So I'd say Li Na just had a bad day.  She was off.  Simple as that.  No way to predict it.

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

WEEK ONE CANNOLI REPORT
YODA CUP CREW DOMINATES RACE FOR CANNOLI

At the end of week one, the top of the Cannoli leaderboard looks a lot like the Yoda Cup standings.
ARVIS is 2nd, CROSSCOURT is 3rd, and GUGA is tied for 4th!
TONO is tied for 12th and DON is in the process of proving that even Yoda Cup competitors can be human, languishing way down in a tie for 54th.
ARVIS keeps promising to plummet down the leaderboard, so far falsely.
ACTUALLY ARVIS IS 4TH OUT OF 11,008 IN THE MEN'S!
TONO keeps telling DON he's going to climb up the leaderboard, so far falsely.
We shall see what ensues!

ONE OF OUR LITTLE GROUP OF FIVE WILL WIN THE CANNOLI!!!  YODA CUP RULES!!!

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

It would be GREAT to see one of us win the Cannoli!!
Hopefully the cards fall in OUR favour and one of us run off with the "sweet taste of victory" smile

Re: OBI WAN CANNOLI 2011

Actually, Tono, not to put too fine a point on it, but Guga already has it won.  Or should I say my man Dragan has it won.   ;-D

...WELL, NO!!!  Not with Tsonga going out to Fed!

Congratulations to TONO, high score among the Yoda Cup crew in the inaugural Obi Wan Cannoli!!!

Sadly, a lucky fool or two snuck by him.  We shall endeavor never to allow such an occurrence again!!!
