Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I joined the R2D2 Crown and I like the name.  The little guy was always one of my favorites!  I went with Chela because he was playing so well lately and of course on what seems to be his best surface. he bombs out pretty easily.  Is this young Stebe any relation to Carl Ewe Stebe, who played on the tour some years ago? I may have the last name spelled incorrectly.  Carl's last name may be spelled Steeb.  It's going to be a challenge just keeping track of all of the fantasy tennis site's I am signed up for!  Though it's a good problem to have. smile

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

It was in fact Carl-Uwe Steeb, not Stebe.

Kamke, the guy Chela went out to, was the most improved player on the tour last year, according to the other players.  I was very worried about that match, especially after Kamke won his first round match 6-1 6-1 -- but went with Chela anyway because I thought if he made it past Kamke he had a fairly easy path to the semis.

I didn't take Youzhny because GGL owns him and I did not see GGL going down to Reister in the first round.  Ouch!  Had GGL and Chela had won their first round matches, Chela would have had only Cilic and GGL between him and the semis.  I didn't see a way NOT to take him.  Oh, well!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

There was some tough matches to pick in this tourney I must agree, I had a look at Chela too but I was also concerned with Kamke & Cilic in his path, I almost took Melzer which wouldn't have been a bad idea and I strongly considered Mayer too but in the end I'm happy with my lot smile
Wolmas- You can make different picks in each league, you don't have to make the same picks for both!
I don't think you should back out now Wolmas, hang in till the end of the season and use it as practice :0

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I absolutely agree that you should hang in there, Wolmas.  Next year is the bigger deal anyway.

If you've already used up 3 Nadal and Federer picks before our league got started, you're clearly at a huge disadvantage this year -- but simply take that fact into account when you judge how you're doing.  Or so I think, anyway.

I always had Monfils, Almagro and Chela as my picks.  On the other two, at one point I had Melzer and Cilic.  Then Melzer and Mayer.  Then I got worried that Ferrero would continue his run, so I ditched Melzer for Ferrero.  Oof.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

That's what I enjoy about our group of tennis enthusiasts, we all want to win and gain bragging rights over each other but we also support one another if one of us are doing particularly well in ANY competition smile
Don has joined us in the Bracket Challenge Guga smile
Tight match between Malisse & Harrison I see, just what I expected that's why I chickened out and picked Dewarman to make a few easy dollars for me wink...well hopefully he does anyway....haha!
Im having a good run in The Vader Trophy smile have got a nice early break on the field BUT one poor result in a Masters or GS event and my lead could easily disappear, but for now things are looking good!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Great,we have a strong group then.Maybe we'll grew even more, all the way to the first place. smile I hope that Harrison will win,he's my favorite youngster. But the real thing for me is Devvarman.Hes win will bring me some 20€.Which is in Serbia enough for about two days of good food and couple of new tickets. smile

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I was relying on Malisse being too crafty for the youngster, but Ryan is giving him a run for his money.  It's anybody's match.  Of course, the same can be said for virtually every Isner match.

To be honest, I haven't paid any attention at all to Devvarman.  Wouldn't know him if he bit me.

Harrison broke Malisse at 4-4 (with some help from the X-man) and then held to close it out.  Nice win for the youngster.  We shall see how he fares in his quarter-final, more than likely against Hewitt.  Should be interesting.

Did you put some money on Somdev there Guga??? Betting man I see huh wink
Devvarman is a good solid player Don, he knocked over Tipsarevic in Serbia in straight sets to level the Davis Cup tie earlier in the year and has climbed to No.68 in the world so that's not too shabby!!

My lead in the Vader Trophy is extending smile Will I become the 1st "Lord" of The Vader League??? wink

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Geez, Tono's lead is just getting bigger, it seems like.  WHY DOES TONO WIN EVERYTHING??

When Gilles Muller shows Kevin Anderson that Luxembourgian tennis is king, THEN I'll be back in this!!

LOL...I'm on a hot streak huh Arvis....and lovin it! smile
As the Djoker would say "I'm gonna ride this streak as long as I can and keep taking one tourney at a time".
I have a target on my back now I guess huh!!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

OK, Tono, quit bribing the players, man!

First Cilic dumps a 3rd set tiebreak to Youzhny, then Monfils donates a bagel 3rd set to Simon.  Oof!!!

My only hope for respectability at this early point is if Florian Mayer can somehow make the final.  That's a slim reed to hang your hopes on, friends.

Oh, well, there's 4 Masters Series tourneys and the US Open.  I'm not dead just yet!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

My confidence in Monfils, and it was slim, has now become non-existent.  I do not know the details (injury?) but an athlete like him should not get bagled in the third set.  I went with Malisse but am very happy for Harrison as we need a new youngster on the horizon in US tennis.

Sorry Don, but Almagro just knocked out Florian.  sad  Anderson is having a tough time with Muller at the moment, can he come back and win in three?  I feel like he may be the better athlete buts needs to take this second set!

Tono, I switched to Connors because I needed his grit and determination, especially competing with and against you guys!  I agree that Wolmas should stay and play with us!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Anderson saves triple-break point serving at 3-4 down in the 2nd.  Unbelievable.  I could practically taste the victory...  T_T

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

When Monfils is injured, he retires.  He lost a close service game at 0-1 in the 3rd, Simon held to go up 3-0, and Monfils just checked out as far as I can tell.  I do not like his mental state at all.  It is the only thing keeping him from going to the next level IMO.

Likewise, Mayer lost to Almagro simply because Almagro played better in the tiebreaks.  Almagro won 91 points and Mayer won 90.  Florian is 0-4 lifetime in finals.  He does not perform better in pressure situations by any means.

I'm not sure that Anderson is a better athlete than Muller.  Neither has impressed me at all with their athleticism.  Certainly neither moves very well.  This match was always going to be about tiebreaks.  To me, the only surprise is that at 5 all in the 2nd, Muller has had 4 break points and Anderson has had 7.  I would not have been surprised if it had been 0.  Both players managed to convert one of the break points somehow.  Clay court tennis, this is not.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Whatever, all I know is MULLER WON!  YES!  I'm back in the thick of things in Atlanta. big_smile

-Arvis

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Good call Arvis, going with Muller, most of the rest of us had Anderson.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Very nice move, indeed, Arvis.

I suppose that, considering the way things are falling for Tono, Devvaarman will now beat Fish and win the tourney!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Thank you both. smile
I hope something comes of it.  I like Muller a lot.

In regards to Tono: PROBABLY.  I looked on FTT and Tono is at the top of the leaderboards in main league in both Hamburg and Atlanta.  But now that Kevin Anderson lost, he may drop in ATL a bit, as the 2 or 3 people sharing the lead with him there both had Ryan Harrison.

Does nobody here remember Gilles Muller's 2008 US Open run?  No idea where he's been since then.  Maybe injured?

That would be a nice surprise Don if Devvarman were to beat the Fish but somehow I doubt it! But in these 250 tourneys you never know huh wink
I almost picked Muller too Arvis and yes I remember his run at the US Open, only reason I didn't pick him in that bracket was bcoz of Haas really, I thought he would make life difficult for MR Anderson...no Matrix Revolution for him huh!!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

You are welcome to join us in the ATP bracket challenge too if you want Wolmas...R2D2 Crown is the league name!
