Topic: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Finally we are up and running everyone!
A few upsets in the 1st round at Stuttgart huh, Davydenko and Melzer both going out, it's early days though and you don't win that much prizemoney fro the 250 tourneys so plenty of time left in the season smile

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

At least I didn't waste one of my Melzer picks.  He has always done badly at this tourney and form held.  I was worried about Davydenko, but I figured against a WC he was good.  If he gets past the first round, he usually plays a little better.  But noooooooooo!!!

Tono, your last post about Davydenko in the Wimbledon thread raised the question of match fixing.  I don't believe for an instant that Nikolay would do such a thing.  Like Kafelnikov before him, Davydenko has always played too many tournaments.  Like Kafelnikov, he has always lost a lot of first round matches for a top player.  I have always chalked that up to overplaying.  Also, he does take awhile to adjust to the new surface when the tour moves to and from clay.  Perhaps that was what was at work here -- first match on clay after the grass court season.

Still, knowing what we do about how the Russian mafia operates, I guess it isn't impossible that top Russian players have to throw the occasional match just to keep all their family members alive.  I certainly HOPE that isn't what's going on, but how would we ever know?

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Yeah true Don, let's give Nikolay the benefit of the doubt then shall we smile
I originally had Melzer picked too but wasn't comfortable picking him especially since his 1st round match was against Giraldo.. he is no slouch.
I was tossing up between Stepanek and Garcia-Lopez but since Garcia-Lopez won that match on day one then my decision was made for me smile
I'm gambling on Ferrero beating Youzhny though, I couldn't decide between those two so I thought I'd go with the Spainard since clay is his favourite surface...BUT Youzhny is in good form so we will see on that one smile
I played safe at the Bastad tourney picking all of the top 4 seeds, they can't really win me a lot of money in the 250 tourneys but it's the 1st time I've picked them so I should be ok further down track...hopefully smile

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Well, Tono, you have an unfair advantage in this competition.  The rest of us only get any player a maximum of 5 times.  But because you've been here longer, you get to take them 8 times.  So the rest of us are playing for second anyway.

Of course, you could MAKE it fair by taking no player more than 5 times in this league.  The only Bastad top 4 seed I took was Ferrer, and I did that only because I think he will win the tourney.  Same for my Monfils pick.  If you only play each player a max of 5 times in this league like the rest of us HAVE to, then you screwed up big time picking all those top players in these little tourneys.

Now that I think about it, Arvis isn't new here either, so he has more picks per player than Aiur, CrossCourt, backhandpass and me, too.

I hope both of you decide to play with the same limitations the 4 of us are forced to play with.  I'm going to keep track of how many times both of you pick each player just so we'll know whether it's apples and apples, or apples and oranges.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Yep agreed Don, same rules should apply for everyone smile I have no issue with that whatsoever!
I only joined this site just before Wimbledon though so I don't get the full allocation of picks either (6picks max I think) BUT I will play fair and stick to a maximum of 5 for any player ok smile
I'm sure Arvis will do the same too.
I only picked the top 4 because I thought there was only 3 Masters series events left,,,DOH ,... there is actually 4, oh well I'm sure I can work around that one... but you are right it doesn't pay to pick the big guns usually at the 250 tourneys, they make you lots of prizemoney at the bigger events which clearly you already know wink
Berdych is not one of my fav's so I shouldn't have any issues with him and Almagro can be hit and miss on the hardcourts so it's mainly Soderling and Ferrer I will have to be astute with from now on I think wink IMO

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I've sent a message to Fantasy Tennis Tour. It goes like this:

Thank you for creating this site and spending your spare time updating everything. I am aware that this site is still in it's early days and I - along with some others members such as Tono and backhandpass - want to help you develop this site to become one of the best all-year fantasy tennis sites around - if not THE best.

Therefore Tono, backhandpass and I, possibly others as well, will be sending you regular messages on what needs to be fixed from a user's point of view.

The one thing that needs most working on in this site are the leagues. Apparently there is an option when you create the league where you can select it to become either private or public. This doesn't make sense because we are unable to view or join other leagues without being invited anyway. It would also be a nice addition to be able to invite people by the username rather than their email address (privacy issues).

There is another fantasy site called Grand Slam Fantasy Tennis (GSFT) which is, in my opinion, the most complete fantasy tennis game around. The only problem with it is that is only for Grand Slams. I've tried many all-year fantasy tennis games but one looked too much like a betting site, one was unaccessible and one wasn't enjoyable at all.

This one shows the most promise, and is different to the other sites with the limited picks and the prize money - a good thing. If you need a guide on how to set up the leagues, try looking at the GSFT setup.

Another good addition would be to split "My Leagues" into 2 different tabs:
- "My Picks" for the viewing/editing picks
- "My Leagues" for viewing/joining leagues.

We'd appreciate any changes you make.

Thank you,
CrossCourt

It probably wasn't a good idea to mention this site, but they really need to improve and this site would be the perfect role model. What do you think?

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Good on ya CrossCourt, they seem to be very open to improvements and I have had polite feedback so far from them too which is good. The admin team changed the name of the league without me requesting it which I thought was proactive and I have now asked for it to be spelt correctly...e.g Vader instead of Vadar....haha!
All our knowledge from this league should be a big help to them I think so it can't hurt if we all give them suggestions from time to time.
Obviously they have to try and alter the closing date for picks, you shouldn't be able to pick guys who have already won their 1st round matches on day one of the tourney but I guess if it's the same for everyone then it's not the end of the world huh.
It would also be nice to be able to see what all the other competitors (MAIN LEADERBOARD) have picked once all picks have closed, not just your own league/leagues......good things take time!
When I joined you couldn't even see what other people had picked even after the picks had closed so that's a new improvement they have made recently which is good.
I have a feeling that this site will only get better smile lets hope so anyway!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Wow, Monfils lost.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Very nice job on the letter, CrossCourt.  We are one helpful bunch of tennis fanatics, aren't we?  Don, I picked Davydenko AND Monfils, both had one set leads then lost.  Not an auspicious start for me.  And like Tono, I picked the top four in Sweden.

Still having to go to the library to log on, hate that!  Anyone have a used laptop they want to sell (at a very reasonable price) to their tennis compatriot?  smile

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Yep another upset huh Aiur, maybe I won't be wasting my picks anymore in these lil 250 tourneys, all we need now is for Youzhny to get beaten and the top 4 seeds will all be gone...wow indeed!
Monfils did have 2 match points though I see....sigh... oh well!
Montanes beaten too sad Andujar is good on clay though so that's not overly surprising.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Crosscourt, I think it was a good idea that you mentioned this site, but hopefully they had already been aware of it as they really should know their competition.  But they did mention that they are doing this on the side, so having a format to look at that actually works and is enjoyed by it's participants is a good thing.

I was pleased to get a very polite reply back from them with most of the same information that some of you already received.  Again they seem to really want constructive feedback.  Feedback is a gift!

Time to leave the library.  Will check back tomorrow...

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Try Ebay backhand. If you're only looking to browse the internet, you should be able to find one with a gig of RAM, 250 gig+ hard drive and a decent graphics card for like $250-$300, depending on the size of the screen.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I got a laptop on Amazon for my wife back when we were dating for under $250.  And it's still pretty good, although certainly outdated.

Any updates on who is winning these minor tournaments?  I went against my better judgment and tried going to the Fantasy Tennis Tour website and, unsurprisingly, THE SITE NEVER LOADED.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

In the Swedish Open, only Berdych has played so far from my picks, resulting in my low ranking. I'm not doing too badly in the Merc Cup... oh, who am I kidding? Montanes, Monfils, Melzer (waste of a pick - I was hoping he'd turn his fortunes around on the red dust) all out - I'm still happy with the Montanes pick, though. Only Youzhny left. He hasn't been having a bad run lately but if I had my way, I wouldn't rely on Youzhny to be my last man standing.

Don, why did you choose Davydenko? I'd rather use him at the US Open or the Tour Finals (remember '09?) or maybe other indoor hard court tournaments - that's if I choose him at all.

For the the German Open Championships, apparently Monfils, Almagro, Melzer, Simon annd Youzhny are playing. This would be an ideal time to choose a clay-court specialist; there are quite a few playing this year.

Has anybody realised that when you try and select players before the draw is out, you are allowed to pick Andre Agassi and Gustavo Kuerten?

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Everybody but me has Soderling this week and everybody but Aiur and me has Berdych, too.  We'll see how that works out.  Obviously, if one of them wins the tourney, it was a bad move on my part not to take him.  But I like Ferrer.

Nikolay's a .500 player now.  He's not what he was.  If you want to use him at the US Open, feel free.  The Tour Finals are not part of this tourney.  It ends with Paris.

That's funny about Guga and Andre.  I'll take them both next tourney for sure!

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

By the time the US Open comes 'round, Nikolay would definitely be unseeded, or close to it. I might pick him if he is unseeded. Again, it's a risk but if he gets through the first round, it might well be worth it.

The biggest problem with my Wimbledon team this year were the 1st round losses. My men's team would've been better if Kohli made it through. My poor women's team was due to a mixture of 1st round losses and top players who didn't perform - yes, I'm staring right at you Vera and Li Na.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I think Ferrer will be tough to beat too Don, I also like your Monaco pick, I had him picked before I saw the draw released but when the draw came out I changed my mind and went with Berdych instead, hopefully I don't come to regret that decision hmm

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Yes, play Davydenko here MAYBE -- but don't play him in Vader for sure!

Vamos Juan!!!

I do regret not taking Almagro.  Should have taken him instead of Volandri.

Dude, Luckasz Kubot is making a serious push to be a Top 30 player all of a sudden.  Quality win over a good clay courter today.

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Wolmas, from what I've gathered, for some reason the size of the leagues at that very imperfect site is limited to 6 people, and the Vader Trophy group already has 6. I can think of no reason why the league size SHOULD be limited, but my understanding is that it is.

Hey Tono, I just checked my standings and saw you, Don, and a couple of other familiar names.  I read where you joined FTT just before Wimbledon, and seeing as how I wasn't able to make my Wimbledon picks - we should be on similar-equal footing.  If you wouldn't mind sending me an invite, my e-mail: webized@yahoo.com.

Hiya Wolmas smile I will send you the link to join BUT as Don has stated above there does appear to be a maximum number of 6 people allowed in any league set up... BUT we shall put this to the test and find out.
I invited Guga to join also but he declined, he's keeping his cards close to his chest to try and win Yoda Cup supremacy no doubt wink

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

All three of my losing picks in the Mercedes Cup had won the first set but eventually lost.  I am so happy that I can not watch these matches, because I know that I would have not been pleased and I need to keep my blood pressure down.  smile

Kobot is playing some great ball at the moment.  He probably should have won his match with Lopez at Wimbledon.  I played some great tennis myself today!  The outdoor season is short up here in Wisconsin and I am trying to squeeze as much tennis in as I can.  I hit some amazing back hand passes today!  smile

Ferrero beats Youzny!  Boooo!  sad  My Mercedes Cup is over!

Nick job picking Ferrero, Tono!

It's very early days in THE VADAR TROPHY... the BIG tourneys are where you wanna shine and make the BIG BUCKS! Plenty of time to still make your move there bhp smile

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

Thanks, Tono!  On another note, I finished in the top ten in the Men's Competition at the French and should be getting a subscription to Tennis Magazine.  Does anyone know how long it should take to start getting the magazine?  When should I start rattling cages if the magazines do not start coming?

Re: THE VADER TROPHY! (Vader League 2011)

I'd start rattling now bhp, send Charles an email, he will get onto it promptly 4 ya smile
