Topic: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

I believe the more he bounces, the more nervous he is.

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

That is somewhat true Beebo but it is also his way of focusing on the BIG points too.
While he is bouncing the ball he would be thinking about where he is going to serve and telling himself to get the 1st serve in, it has become a ritual for him now that when things get tight on serve he bounces the ball numerous times.
He has improved this quirk quite a bit, it used to be a little annoying bcoz he would bounce the ball waaay too much most of the time, now he tends to only do it when he needs to focus and win the big points.

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

If the bouncing would make him more nervous he would not bounce the ball so much.He said it many times. It's he's way to find focus in the bigest points.

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

I think he meant that Nole bounces the ball more when he's nervous, Guga.  I don't think he was saying that bouncing it MAKES him nervous.  But I don't think it's a sign of nervousness at all.  He does it in pressure situations to help himself focus.  It is a little annoying -- but it seems to work, so if it's annoying, so what?  If it works, do it, I say.  It's certainly not as obnoxious as all the screaming that gets called "grunting" for reasons I don't understand.

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

I used to count Nole's ball bounces in 2007 and 2008. He averaged around 15 bounces before serving. The highest amount of bounces in the matches I watched was 27. Nowadays he seems to average around 8 or 9 bounces before serving. I didn't get to see the Wimbledon Final because I was out, but the last match I saw he maxed out at 16 bounces. It's something he's been working on and I commend him for it. It can definitely throw the opponent's rhythm off and he could have kept bouncing it 20 times before serving as an exploit, but he's above using cheap ploys such as that to gain an advantage over his opponent.

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

I tried bouncing more the other day when I played, and it DID help my serve, amazingly enough.  I was sort of rushing, even though in my head I still knew exactly what I SHOULD do to get my serve in, it just wasn't working.  When I made myself bounce the ball a few more times it helped me settle down and my 1st serve went in more.  But I still only bounced the ball about 5 or 6 times, as opposed to the two times I normally do.

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

When Roger was asked about the 4 hour epic at Madrid between Rafa and Nole last year, he replied that they take so long to serve anyway (the bouncing) so the match was skewed.

I want to join the Yoda Cup too. Only 44 posts to go.

A lot of Yoda Cup interest sparking.

BTW Beebo, as you're a newcomer and you want to join The Cup, I'll give you a tip:

Never, ever, ever argue with Don. He's always right. It's a fact of life. If Don says you're a "he", then you're a "he". Don't worry about it, you'll get over it soon enough. wink

Good luck. smile

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

The natural instinct of a tennis player is to rush. You see it at all levels, and the impact that rushing has on your game is pretty significant. If Novak needs to bounce the ball in order to keep himself focused and at a good pace of play, then by all means he should do it. People find ways to cope with the "rushing mentality" in their own ways, ball bouncing being a fairly easy way to solve the problem.

Aw, cmon, CrossCourt.  Gimme a break, will ya?

Sorry, Beebo --  thanks for setting me straight.  It's good to have female input.  That's one reason I'm glad Sophie will be with us for the next Yoda Cup competition.  In case you hadn't noticed yet, most all the regular posters are guys.  That was the basis for my incorrect assumption.  Welcome to the conversation!

Are you a Sheila, too, as they say in Oz, CrossCourt?

Oh that's very nice Don, very nice. No I'm a guy, Don. wink Just getting it straight - I'M A GUY.

Look at Beebo's home page - she's from Victoria, Australia. It's good to have another team from "down under" in the mix. Beebo came in at 18th in Australia for the Wimbledon women's team; not bad for a first Grand Slam.

Not bad at all.

We all knew you were a guy, CrossCourt.

I always got along with the Aussies I knew before.  Apparently you're the exception that proves the rule, right?

Re: Is Nole's ball-bouncing annoying or what?

We don't get along that badly, do we? hmm
