I don't like anybody's style of play that much these days. Like Tono, I miss the style of play of Edberg and Rafter. Those were my two favorites to watch of all time, simply because of the beauty of the way they played. But that style is gone, dead and buried due to technology as you explained in some detail, Scotty.
So then, I suppose I could have just given up watching altogether. But the game has always meant too much to me to do that.
Now the style of play I like best is described, I think, as giving absolutely nothing away while being as aggressive as possible. Hence I'm a big David Ferrer fan as well as Rafa.
I love Rafa's mental toughness, and the amazing consistency of his ability to raise his game at crucial moments, which seems to me a step beyond what other great champions have mustered. I really like the fact that few people are as fit as Rafa -- or as strong as Rafa for that matter, because he isn't really all that big, you know. I love his groundstrokes, both of which are improbable and very effective. And I really like and admire him as a human being. A part of what I like about him is his modesty, which I find utterly genuine. What sort of person a player is -- that's not a big deal to a lot of people, but it is to me. It's a big part of why people like Rafter and Edberg and Agassi are among my all time favorites. It's the combination of the incredibly beautiful game and who the guy is that makes Rafter my all time favorite player.
Agassi is a good case in point, actually. I despised the young Agassi. As an older player, because of an incredible amount of work, Andre was fitter than anyone, ridiculously strong for his size...beginning to see a common thread? To tell the truth, I guess it was the older Andre's play that first led me to admire the "be as aggressive as humanly possible while giving nothing away" approach to the game. And Agassi has done more humanitarian work than any tennis player ever. Good on ya, Andre!
But I suppose the biggest deal to me is the Federer/Nadal rivalry. I'll be honest: Roger's smugness has always put me off big time, in spite of the fact he's unquestionably earned the right to be smug. I don't have to like it. I absolutely love the fact that Rafa owns him. I'm smiling right now just thinking about it.
It's actually starting to make Roger a better person. I'll probably wind up being a Federer fan, too, if the trend continues. Still, I will be for Rafa to win everything until he has eclipsed Roger so clearly that no one can argue about it.
So that's the basis for my opinion, which, I have to admit, is definitely NOT unbiased. ;-D
