Topic: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I am posting these rankings all over the place because I wasted a bunch of time doing them, so here they are again!  I'll come here to update them after each round is over, if anyone is interested. smile

#(PowerRank). (Name) - (GamesLost), (Sets Lost) Ties determined by quality of last win.

#1. Tomas Berdych - 21, 0
#2. Roger Federer - 29, 0
#3. Rafa Nadal - 29, 0
#4. Richard Gasquet - 32, 0
#5. Xavier Malisse - 29, 1
#6. Michael Llodra - 32, 1
#7. Novak Djokovic - 32, 1
#8. Juan Martin del Potro - 37, 1
#9. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - 42, 1
#10. Mardy Fish - 43, 1
#11. Feliciano Lopez - 45, 1
#12. Andy Murray - 37, 2
#13. David Ferrer - 41, 2
#14. Bernard Tomic - 44, 2
#15. Mikhail Youzhny - 48, 3
#16. Lukasz Kubot - 49, 4

What do you guys think?  Do you agree with my Power Rankings?  How about Berdych, statistically dominating all other players?  How about Xavier Malisse, losing the same number of games as Federer and Nadal?  I was surprised at how some of these turned out.

If you disagree with how I calculated these, post your own Power Rankings here!

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I think Berdych has had a good run so far but these stats do not necessarily show how well the players have played. It would also have to depend on the opponent but I guess the draw is to blame. If you'd made this list on rd 2, I would not have guessed that Bernard would make the list. #14 is pretty impressive, with his 5-setter against Igor and Robin Soderling right after that.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I disagree that Malisse's win over Melzer is that high quality of a win. Melzer has nearly a .500 record there and has at best made the 4th round one time. Llodra's win over Lu is slightly more impressive in my opinion seeing as Lu has won big matches here against higher quality opponents. People need to remember that Djokovic just beat a player (Baghdatis) that has gone to the SF and QF here before and I believe he gives much more competition in big matches than Melzer. Also, Del Potro's win over Simon in straight sets is impressive. Feliciano Lopez beat Andy Roddick a multiple time finalist here and much better grass court player than Lu, Melzer, Baghdatis, and Simon.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

All of that is true, Scotty.  The victims have not been equal, so the numbers are apples, oranges, strawberries, grapes and kiwis.  Still, we can be confident Berdych is playing better than Youzhny and Kubot.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Don't knock the kiwi's Don....lol!
Yeah stats can be manipulated to make players look better than they really are sometimes but Berdych definitely has regained his Mojo alright, he could be the darkhorse right now.
Malisse's win in straight sets over Melzer was very impressive as was Del Po's against Simon, the lil Frenchman makes you beat him so Del Po is playing his way back into form, watch for him to have a good hardcourt season!

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I look at quality of the opponent as opposed to games and sets lost. Kubot to me has been one of the most impressive players of the tournament. He got by the crafty veteran Clement in the first round, took out Dr. Ivo in straights and took down Monfils. Not bad for a doubles guy.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Hey, the kiwis are worth nearly as much as the strawberries (same in points if not status) -- and more than those non-tennis fruits.

Well, OK, New Zealand is not Oz, but at least it's sorta in the neighborhood.

Nice run for Kubot.  Now it has to end.  You're not picking him to win his next one, Aiur and neither is anyone else.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I'm not picking Kubot because I've never seen him play a full singles match. I caught some of his match against Djokovic in Australia last year, but that's it. Lopez is an interesting character and can just go away mentally in any given match, so I don't think he's a lock by any stretch.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I've seen Lopez do exactly as you say more than once.  Seems to me it's always when he gets behind early.  I suppose it could happen again -- if Kubot manages to win the first set and get up a break in the second.  Otherwise, I think this is too big an opportunity for Lopez to lose focus.

Kubot has already far exceeded everyone's expectations.  He's "playing with house money" at this point.  He'll be going for it.  So the upset certainly could happen.  It's just somewhat unlikely.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I watched Tomic beat Feliciano Lopez just this last Aussie Open. Lopez just decided to check out. If he checks out again, he will lose. But I just don't see it happening at this stage.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

And not at Wimbledon, which has always been his favorite tourney on his favorite surface.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

If Andy Murray can get past Gasquet then I definitely think he will make the semi's, but he will have to play well 1st match up on Centrecourt if he wants to take down the Frenchman, I'm picking it will be a tense affair, if Murray can take him in straights or even in 4 then that will give him added confidence which is what he needs to keep the dream alive!

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Murray could lose this one -- if Gasquet can keep his head, which is always questionable with Richard.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Heres how i see it. I have 0 chance to win this
thing unless the dead obvious pick of nadal/federer
final somehow doesnt work out. I agree with you guys,
this is their tournament. So now I have two options:
1. Pick the same people as everyone else in every matchup
and hope my women do work *lisicki I need you to win the durn
thing*
2. Go for broke in 4th round matchups and pray for
Upsets.

Flirting with option 2.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

If I was you, I'd just go for the upsets. My women's team is also suffering and... well... I don't suppose you have anything to lose.

My favourite season is the hard court season so I'm not really worrying to much about a poor performance in Wimbledon - oh, who am I kidding? I'm PANICKING! yikes

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I didn't predict a Rafa/Roger final anyway. I don't like going for obvious picks. I chose a Murray/Roger final which isn't turning out to look so clever. Unless Murray summons up some sort of unexpected magic skills hitherto, he's not going to be able to beat Rafa. I think he'll beat Gasquet in four, then lose to Rafa in four.

Well, if there's one thing I've learnt from this year's Roland Garros and Wimbledon, it's never underestimate Rafa. Although... he's only won in the US once (last year). Roger wasn't really in form, though and Delpo didn't play. Murray defeated Roger in the finals and then made it to the finals at Oz. Murray is a natural hardcourt player.

Now, I'm hoping Delpo loses his match. I don't want him to be in the top 16 before the US Open.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Hey Scotty, I've just looked at your predictions and when I meant upsets, I didn't mean for you to take it too far eg. you chose Wickmayer over Kvitova.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Après moi, le déluge

Let the games begin.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

So far, Tomic won and Murray and Kubot are winning.  They are all lower in my Power Rankings than their opponents.  If that pattern holds (which it won't) then we're in store for some interesting upsets.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Roger v Rafa ( The Perfect Yoga Master v The Street Fighter)
That's what these two guys remind me of, Roger glides and plays tennis like he was born to do it while Rafa reminds me of one of my favourite movie characters, Rocky Balboa!
Roger (Apollo Creed) v Rafa (Rocky) always a great contest and usually always goes the distance.... unless its on clay....lol!
Is there another classic match up on the way???

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

I think we have to admit that Federer/Djokovic is looking like the match of the tournament at this point.

Go, Roger!  (Sorry, Tono!)

To me, Rafa is a little more like Manny Pacquiao than Rocky (though admittedly he is between the two as to the size of his frame).  He's not that big, really, but he packs a whale of a punch and you don't want to get into a war of attrition with either of them IMO.

So, maybe more of a champion fighting in Madison Square Garden, than a guy in the street, Tono?  Can I get that from ya, mate?

;-D

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

It's ok Don I may have picked Nole to win but I would really like to see Roger claim his 7th Wimbledon, I guess either way I will be sorta happy huh wink unless Fed loses the final of course....DOH! Fed will probably start favourite I think.
I guess size wise Rafa is more like the Pac-Man but Pacquiao is a natural talented fighter unlike Rocky who had to earn his dues the hard way, I was making more reference to the fact that Nadal has worked his butt off to get where he is and he has plenty of heart and courage where as it pretty much all comes naturally to the Fed Express.
Streetfighter mentality but way more class than a streetfighter does Rafa possess so either way he is still a GREAT Champ, when he is in the zone he always has that look of...."you sure you wanna scrap with me" kinda attitude. Be interesting to see how he goes against the Fish, look for that heart and courage to see him triumph once again!
Be of interest to see if Tomic gets over-rawed by the ocassion against the Djoker too, if he steps up and plays well then maybe we have seen the beginning of a future champion!

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Fed has been the favorite of the (often wrong) bookies from jump street (comme on dit).  That and 5 bucks will get ya some Starbucks, though.

Nice prizefighter analogies and analysis IMO.  Still, I think Manny works pretty hard, too!  But Fed is more like Sugar Ray Leonard, then?  No, more like Ali, but smaller.

I like the Pac-Man thing.  THAT'S funny, mate!

Also, I really believe Tomic will win more than one major eventually.  Maybe not 11.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

Yeah I was gonna suggest Sugar Ray but Rocky is one of my fav movies of all time so I preferred to use that analogy better, plus Apollo Creed thought he was smooth and slick (which he was) until Rocky come along and knocked him off his perch... now you see the reason? smile
Tomic huh...hmmmm could be a good call, lets wait and see.

Re: Round of 16 Power Rankings!

If Federer wins, I'll be thrilled for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that we would have three DIFFERENT Grand Slam champions this year.
