Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

I don't think where you're born is nearly as significant as where you grow up. Yea, she was born in Siberia, but she was only there for two years. She moved to Sochi for 5 years before coming to the US. I highly doubt she has fond memories of Siberia.

BTW, does anyone here think someone from Saudi Arabia or Israel would consider themselves Asian?

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

You two are good entertainment really, C'mon Scotty you gotta rejoin us, surely a few harsh words can't make you disappear from the chance to take out the inaugural Yoda Cup....surely!
If anything Scotty you are giving back as good as you are getting.. so as Don suggests "Man Up" and rejoin us!
The rivalry could turn into something akin to Roger v Rafa who knows....lol!

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

It's nothing personal.Ofcourse that's a political thing. If we look geograficly you are right. But it's not that simple, and I don't want to go in to this subjekt any more. You must look Russians as people, not strictly geograficly.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Why don't we just ask Maria if she is European or Asian?  Or really, ask ANYONE from Siberian if they're European or Asian.  I don't think you'll find any that claim "Asian-ness."

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Don't get me wrong, but "Siberian" how you call it,is not countery,it's a part of Russia. smile Tono also wrote:"She was born in Siberia and raised in Russia."It's all MOTHER RUSSIA! smile

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

And most of "mother Russia" lies in Asia!   ;-D

I'm from the US.  Part of the US is in the Pacific.  So if I say so, then I'm a Pacific Islander, right?  Wrong.  Siberia is where it is -- and it ain't Europe.

We go by where people were born until and unless they change nationalities.  It's just a convention, but it is the one in universal use.  Does Sharapove remember Siberia?  Of course not.  Does that matter?  Of course not.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Ok, hope that topic is exhausted.  I have never watched Tomic before and he is giving Nole fits right now.  However when I look at him all I can think is that he must be Petr Korda's love child.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

This whole subject dos not mater. smile C'MON TSONGA!

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

This whole conversation is meaningless. The borders between Europe and Asia are determined entirely by culture, and Russia is large enough and multicultural enough to where you can't say definitively one way or the other if it is wholly European or Asian.  To illustrate: Russia is a permanent member of The Council of Europe AND The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.

This is why the term "Eurasia" exists.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

I agree arvis my man. smile Nole won!

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Tsonga has been impressive.  If he keeps it up, he'll be hard for anybody to beat.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Tsonga the new favorite to win Wimbledon?

I doubt it, I say Djokovic beats him in straight sets in the semis.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

He has a 5-2 edge over Nole and if Nole plays as sluggish as he did today, it'll be a first Wimbledon final for the French man.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Nah Tsonga just played HIS final I think, he will have difficulty getting up AGAIN to topple Nole, Djokovic will become No.1 if he wins and this time he has no Federer to contend with, the Djoker in 4sets for me!
Poor Roger, I guess the questions are going to be asked once again, is his star waning?/? I think the twinkle is starting to lose some sparkle that's for sure, he looked slow around the court to me, he is approaching 30 I guess.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

I don't think he'll keep it up, either, Tono.  But then again, I didn't think he'd take more than a set from Roger.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

We shall see how Tsonga and Nole handle the day.  Fed seemed so low key and almost resolute to the fact he would lose, no visible fire.  Maybe he is saving himself for a Gold medal run next year?  lol

So I assume there will be a Wimbledon and then the Olympic event on the grounds?

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Bye Bye Fedal Final!!

Looking ever so sweet for my prediction.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Looking pretty good for mine too Scotty.
Fed had that look of... oh well I'll just keep playing and I should win...shouldn't I? He needed to fire himself up and give himself a few c'mons or something, he didn't show the heart that Rafa possesses thats for sure, no way Rafa would have gone away quietly, Tsonga was on fire but Fed was in trouble and needed to try something to get back into it, I think that Roger felt that Tsonga couldn't maintain the level he was playing at and it would just be a matter of time before Jo started missing, never ever give a Frenchman more self belief than he needs bcoz they can become unstoppable!
Very disappointing for all Fed fans sad but credit goes to Tsonga for not flagging the match away after going down 2 sets to love.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Fed played well. 11 unforced errors. The Frenchman just had his on fire day. Remember that video I posted? I was so inspired by watching that again. He has what it takes, but consistency is what lacks sometimes. I don't think Federer was wrong in hoping Tsonga would top out too early. But the level never dropped, and Nadal loses to Tsonga on a day like this too. I mean he has been on this side of Tsonga before.

Murray wins Wimbledon.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Keeping the Scottish dream alive I see there Scotty.....lol!
If Andy Murray can lift that trophy then he will have definitely deserved it...but somehow I think Rafa will find a way to beat him and dash British hopes once again.
They both look like great semifinal match-ups though I must say, Nadal and Djokovic start favourite IMO but Murray and Tsonga could both cause the upset, fascinating to see who wins through smile

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

If Tsonga plays in the next round like he did today, he'll be in the final.  But how likely is it he'll play that well again?  Not very likely, I think.

We'll see how Murray reacts to the pressure now that he's in the semis facing a match he's supposed to lose.  If he competes well, he's in with a chance, but again, it doesn't seem to me that a Murray win is very likely.  If Murray does come through somehow, he will lose the final if he faces Djokovic IMO.

If Rafa and Nole both make the final, it should be a great match played at a VERY high level.

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Agreed Don!
If Tsonga can reproduce the form he showed today then Nole is in trouble, but like you I doubt that he will be able to.
How Murray reacts to the BIG points will determine whether or not he can beat Nadal, if he wastes too much energy on whinging etc he won't win, he has the game to trouble Rafa and the crowd will certainly help him but I think Rafa might be too tough mentally for him, Britain will go into a frenzy if Murray gets up and wins, if he does win the only issue will be the same as Tsonga....will he have played HIS final?
For Jo Wilfred to win it all he will have to beat 3 of the top 4 players in the world consecutively, can't see that happening!

Re: Players You Thought About Taking But Didn't?

Fed won 10 more points than Jo but still lost. Tsonga seemed to be hitting the right shots at the right times.
