Topic: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Who has impressed you the most so far in RG 2011?
And who has disappointed you the most?
For me it's been Djokovic and Federer that have been impressive so far, no surprises there I guess, they are both class acts, in the women's I liked the way Schiavone attacked her opening match too.
By far the most disappointing for me is Ernests Gulbis, going down in straight sets to Blaz Kavcic, what the hell has happened with this talented guy?
He was being touted as a potential top 10 player a few years ago, I just think he can't really be bothered with all the tournaments and the whole travel thing, such a waste really.
At least Berdych fought hard to stave off being knocked out in the 1st round!

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Can't really give any answers seeing as how the 1st round hasn't been completed yet, although I think Berdych losing when he was up two sets to love is a major disappointment.

The Gulbis case is pretty simple in my eyes. Tennis is just a hobby for him, but it just so happens that he has a ton of natural talent. He has no heart. Might be because his family is rich, who knows.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Most Disappointing: That Loser, Ryan Sweeting.  He won Houston and took out some really good players in the process, and now he loses in the first round to Adrian Haider-Maurer??  Sad.

Most Impressive: Stephane Robert, easily.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Did anyone see Federer beat Tipsarevic?
Roger is looking sharp, sure he is yet to meet one of the big guns but he is playing himself into form at the right time I think, he's a definite chance at this stage.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Yes, but at least Roger is playing seeds.  Nadal is getting a no-name qualifier in his 3rd round match, and I DOUBT he'll manage a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 scoreline against him.  Roger definitely one of the best players right now.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I think Fabio Fognini and Albert Montanes have both been very impressive in this tournament.  Not only have they been winning, but they've been winning convincingly!  And the best thing is that the two of them will be facing each other in the next round!

After seeing Montanes' DISMANTLING of Youzhny, my money is on him to beat Fognini and make it through to the 2nd week.  An AMAZING result for the journeyman Spaniard.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I'm very excited to see Montanes keep up his incredible form...and Alejandro Falla as well! Very impressed with both players.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Pretty disappointing effort from Tsonga today. Up two sets and a break, seemingly cruising to a win. Stan raises his game, and Tsonga can't match. He loses the third set and then just falls flat the next two sets. Also on the disappointment side, Wozniacki. She was destroyed by Hantuchova.

On the most impressive side, definitely have to give a shout out to Hantuchova, Wawrinka for battling back from two sets to love down and my girl, Gisela Dulko.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Was Dulko playing really well?  Did she beat Stosur, or did Stosur beat herself by playing badly?

-Arvis

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Stosur killed Dulko in the second set...but I missed most of it.
And how about Gasquet? Apparently he came out of his corner swinging and dispatched Bellucci fairly easily despite the latter's putting up a good fight and winning the third set...
Oh and Delpo! He's taken a set from Djokovic; I really REALLY hope he can close it out tomorrow!!

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Yep the upsets keep coming huh!
Stosur and Wozniacki are gone and im guessing more upsets to come in the women's, maybe we will have a 1st time GS winner on the women's side, Azarenka or Jankovic would be my picks.
Dulko has always been very good on clay, she has a 0-4 record against Bartoli but they have never played on clay so it will be an interesting match.
How about Albert Montanes huh..... he is playing well and I too think he will dispatch Fognini which will certainly give my team a big lift smile Jo Wilfred....sigh, he had that match, he just needed to maintain his focus and grind out the win, Stan was mentally tougher in the end I think.
And Djokovic and Del Po locked at 1set all, interesting match now bcoz it becomes a best of three set match,
Del Po has a big chance to be the first to beat Novak this year, the Djoker needs to move him around and make him come forward more, Del Potro is very comfortable sitting on the baseline slugging it out, the tall Argentine is back, watch out for him at the US Open.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I wouldn't count on Jankovic...she's one of the biggest (albeit most successful) chokers in the women's top 50. I'd never bet on her for a grand slam; she always gets upset.
Delpo's match made me sad. I was really hoping he'd blast out of the gates this morning but Djokovic kinda one-upped him there, and the rest was history.
Montanes..........whoever picked him is going to rack up the points big time. He's clearly the favorite over Fognini. How many points is it if an unseeded player makes the quarters? It's like 144 right? -headdesk-

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Yeah Jankovic does have a record of choking Adrian but if she goes into matches not being the favourite then she tends to relax more and plays well. She has to get past Schiavone first but she has a good record against her, she made the semi's last year so she could make the final, could get stage fright then though huh.....lol!
I do fancy Azarenka though but hey who know's right, the women's draw is just so unpredictable, Vika has been in good form all year and seems to finally believe in herself, although she can suffer from the jitters at times too.
I think without the William's sister's and no Henin this year it has given the rest extra confidence and motivation to do well, Clijsters and Wozniacki going out will help their nerves more too.
Kvitova could be another one to watch too, I think the harder balls are helping her this year smile

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Ohhh man Montanes lost out in a classic 5 setter to Fognini sad I suppose Chela will go on and win now to rub salt in my wound sad
Oh well im still in with a slim chance I think, here's hoping anyway.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Is Fabio Fognini REALLY in a Grand Slam quarterfinal??

-Arvis

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Yes it is true Arvis although it's very debatable whether he deserves to be!
I agree with commentators Fred Stolle and Wally Masur that Fognini should not have been allowed treatment until a change of ends or the game where he cramped was finished, they have 30 seconds between each point and if Fognini couldn't continue without treatment he should've forfeited the points and Montanes declared the winner.
Montanes did have match points and should have still won but Fognini practically gave up and just tried to hit winners, Montanes should have slowed things down a bit, he rushed things when he didn't need to.
The crowd booed Fognini when it finished because they didn't think he should have been allowed treatment halfway through his service game, he was 2 points away from losing the match when he called for treatment, Montanes was not happy about it, neither was I for that matter bcoz I had Albert on my team.....lol!
Djokovic will walk into the semi's now against Fognini!

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I think Fabio got lucky with the absence of Cilic and Almagro in the draw...so many upsets. Admittedly, he's played well, but not quarterfinalist material. This is a very good year for the journeymen & women; so many top players encounter bad luck or bad form at the hands of challengers and qualifiers.
I KNEW Jankovic would lose; Schiavone is too much on the dirt when she's motivated anyhow. And I feel so smart for having put Azarenka, Schiavone and Kvitova all together on my team...hopefully the three of them will help me get enough points to save face from the embarrassment that is my current standing in the bottom 30% on the women's side >.<

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I was hoping Jankovic could pull off the upset and topple Schiavone, almost but not quite good enough.
You are doing better than me in the women's Adrian, I only have Azarenka and Sharapova left on my team sad it's my worst result ever so far, I had a feeling the women's draw was going to be tough to predict.
Only real way I can move up the table is if Azarenka wins the whole thing....could happen??

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I could see that! However, Victoria has a tough draw coming up......she has to beat Li Na, then play the winner of the Sharapova-Petkovic match in order to make the finals, and all three are formidable players. If she stays focused and serves well (and has a touch of luck ;D), I don't see why she couldn't win it all! My money, however, is on either Schiavone or Kvitova.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Oops, just saw that Kvitova actually lost to Li Na... >.<
Azarenka or Sharapova v. Schiavone in the finals it is for me then.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I like Schiavone v. Petkovic in the finals. (Is that even possible? I mean, like I'm too lazy to look at the draw right now...) smile

I know, I know, Petko-baby is still a bit of a head case and isn't nearly consistent enough to be counted on, but her game is VERY capable.

But the weird thing is:  WHO is playing better tennis right now than Francesca Schiavone???  That handsome lady is just amazing!  I don't see Maria, Vika, Li Na, or anybody else playing the kind of game necessary to shake Schiavone's unflappable game right now.  Maybe if Petkovic gets on a hot streak...

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Nadal is strong mentally.  He is still the king of clay in my view.  Djokovic is looking very impressive right now though.  Federer is looking impressive now.  Federer would probably like to ruin Djokovic's chances at number one and be counted among the current elite.  Federer could of and probably should have won the French Open at least once against Nadal.  His mental strength is not as good though.  Even though Federer lost in 07 at the French in the final his strokes impressed me more than Nadal's.  Federer throws in too many errors though.

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

I'll stick with Vika Azarenka to win her 1st GS as long as she doesn't lose her self belief and she keep's playing aggressively, it look's like she will play Schiavone in the final but I have a feeling that Kuznetsova could sneak through and make the final, who really know's in the women's draw though right..... I'm sorta hoping that whoever wins it will be a 1st time Grand Slam winner, that would be nice smile Go Vika!!

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

There goes your idea of Kuznetsova tongue
It's just what I figured...she's not there mentally, and Bartoli was motivated and playing in front of a home crowd.
I don't think Azarenka has a great chance of beating Francesca though; Schiavone was having a shaky clay season before the French but it looks like she's found her groove!

Re: Most Impressive? Most disappointing?

Wouldn't it be crazy if Bartoli makes the finals?  The French crowd would be delirious, even if she is their least-favorite Frenchwoman.
