As I said, we'll agree to disagree.  That's all I have for you on this.

On second thought, maybe I should gloat a little bit because both my match picks and my pre-tourney picks were so very much better than yours.

Or maybe I should just think that and smile.

As for Clijsters, I did a pre-tourney blog about that pick.   ;-D

I'm confused here. I had Federer and Wozniacki winning the tournament. Both went down in the semis. You had Nadal and Clijsters winning the tournament. Nadal went down in the quarters and Clijsters won. How are those picks that much better than mine exactly? Delving a little further, I had Clijsters as the finalist, and you had Henin who was bounced in the third round.

I'm not big on saying this player will upset another player unless I'm 100% confident. I usually just say what I think a player needs to do in order to win judging by his/her style of play and how it matches up to their opponent. The reasoning behind this is simple. A true upset like Dolgopolov beating Tsonga (and then Soderling back-to-back) doesn't happen that often, and since you miss a lot more upset predictions than you hit, it takes away from the luster of an actual correct prediction. So generally, I make like one or two true upset predictions per 'Slam.

I can honestly say I didn't have any big upset predictions this tournament, and I'm fine with that. As long as I have a strong showing from my top seeds I'm pretty happy. I'm pretty happy with the men's team I fielded. The women's team leaves a lot to be desired, but I find the women's game quite nauseating to follow.

One last thing. I'm not a fan of the match selector adding points to your team. I personally feel like that should be a separate entity in itself. I thought I made a suggestion on changing the scoring system awhile back, but the only post I see if the Masters Event idea. The basic scoring system I thought of would give bonuses to players ranked 17-32 and further bonuses to unranked players. This would eliminate the need for extra points through the match selector and would potentially give bonuses to people willing to take risks and choose an additional player ranked 17 and beyond as opposed to someone in the top 16.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Back to actual tennis talk. Pretty pumped for what should be a great match in a little bit. I'm wondering if Murray will play passive like he did in his previous 'Slam finals against Fed or if he will come out with an offensive gameplan like he has employed against Rafa their last couple meetings.

Also, I get a feeling this is bigger for Murray. This is the dream scenario for any player. Murray is the first guy since Roddick and Ferrero at the 2003 US Open to have a shot at winning a 'Slam without needing to beat Rafa or Fed. If he loses this match, I think it'll weigh on him because everyone knows this is probably his best chance to win a major.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Here are the results so far:
Pre-tourney teams:

Aiur teams total: 456+496=952
Don teams total: 440+640=1080

Aiur match picks total: 176+256=432
Don match picks total:  248+280=520

And your picks were as good as mine?  Sure they were.  In your dreams.

Perhaps you should consider the fact that I have always had your back, whether you were making sense or not.  But you don't really get what it is to be a friend, now, do ya?

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Don--
The meer fact that you say that Nadal would have won this tournament if he wasn't injured is irrelevant and lame. Nadal is prone to injury, injuries are part of a sport, and he lost so therefore he lost fair and square in my book. For Nadal to win what you predicted would be a calendar slam, he would have to be a complete player for a whole year. Unfortunately, he has never been up to that challenge and really never will unless genetics or playstyle change. Impossible. Just like Nadal himself said it.

I am going to say Murray is going to win this thing tonight. Celebration in the UK. And my pre-tourney picks will come true on both mens and womens sides.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Scotty, you're probably right about half of that.  Injuries are definitely an inescapable part of the game, and it's clear by now that the way Rafa moves and his style of play may make injuries inevitable.  It may very well limit what he is able to achieve, and that would be a shame.

I'll believe Murray when he finally happens, though.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

You completely lost your head because I called changing your picks a day before the final "silly." You either have some type of mental disorder or the personality of a pre-teen.

To everyone else, I didn't realize the gravity of the word "silly." I'll see you guys in May.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Well worst final I have seen in a long while. This will probably go down like Federer/Hewitt US Open 04.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

So happy for Novak, what a fantastic game he played. There seemed to be no limit to what he could reach in that game, I swear he's made of elastic that boy.

Brilliant final, it was so tense I spent half the time hiding in the bathroom.

Will get a blog up later guys.

Hey Don and Aiur, it's important that we stay civil on these forums. Please do not resort to personal attacks or swear.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

The first set was exciting, and there were some great points and amazing winners by Djokovic, but I thought Murray would put up much more of a fight. Djokovic very much deserved this win - he's on fire. Could he win Wimbledon? Probably not, but he will have a great shot at the US Open this year.

I think he is definitely, if he continues his form now, going to be a big contender in Flushing Meadows. Not sure about Wimbledon, I'm not sure his game moves very well to grass. But it will be exciting to see how he goes on throughout the rest of the year.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Nole carries his great form forward to Indian Wells and Miami.  Seems to me the first big test of whether he can sustain this form will be when the tour moves to clay.  That should tell us a lot.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Djokovic has always been a pretty strong player on clay......he, Nadal, Soderling, & Fed (as always) are going to be the guys to watch this year at Roland Garros. I think the Djoker might even make the final, depending on where he ends up in the draw!

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Cant see Djokovic making the Roland Garros final, he will wilt with the long matches required to win it all, there are a lot of good clay court players and guys who will stay out there for hours to do battle.
Quarters will be his lot I think, maybe semis if he is lucky, Rafa, Fed and Soderling and maybe monfils will be the ones to watch.

Particularly if his hay fever problem catches up with him again! That plus contact lenses can't be great for a player on the clay.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Judging by his track record on clay, I think Djokovic wouldn't merely be lucky to make the semis! He did back to back in '07 and '08.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Ok lucky might be the wrong word Adrian but it does back up my point, he hasn't made the semis at Roland Garros since 2008 so going by the last two years results he may very well miss out again smile

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Djokovic is playing much better than he was the last two years.  Djokovic isn't the only player who likes clay.  Certainly Soderling is more dangerous at RG than at the other Slams, and Berdych is a very strong clay court player as well.  The list goes on.  Verdasco and Ferrer are great clay courters, to mention only the most obvious.  So the semis for Nole is by no means a foregone conclusion -- or even probable, really -- but still, if the great form continues onto the clay, he has to be one of the top three favorites for the semis.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

Agreed he is playing much better and is still one of the big three and is always expected to do well at every slam, but I have a feeling that the long rallies on clay and a few tough matches will take their toll on Nole at Roland Garros, if he gets a favourable draw and gets through the 1st week relatively fresh then who knows.
His run at the Aussie Open was really good but he did enjoy a lot of straight sets victories and practically a walkover against his mate Victor Troicki which I think helped to prime him up for the 2nd week, he looked fresh against Federer and clearly had way more petrol in the tank than Murray in the final, his self belief will have risen considerably which is the biggest thing for him I feel.

Re: Name The 2011 Grand Slam winners!

I, too, doubt Nole's newfound stamina will translate to clay, and if it doesn't, neither will his form.  We'll see.  Ferrer and Wawrinka are on fire, too.  Nalbandian's on the way back and -- we hope -- Delpo as well.  Great mix in men's tennis right now and it's going to get better.

Murray, however, is in decline.  This is the second time in his short career he's been in obvious decline.

This causes me to conclude that he may be a worse head case than anyone yet imagines.  He may turn out to be a more talented version of Andy Roddick.  If so, it will be because he failed to overcome the same problems and demons that have so often defeated Andy.

Based on movement and hands only, Murray stands alone at the top.  Sure, Rafa and Fed and Djokovic and Ferrer move incredibly well and have great hands.  But not as good as Murray at both.  However, having said that, Murray's everything else falls short and tends to fall apart.  I hate to say it, but I think the smart money is on him falling out of the top 10 without ever returning to #2.

I don’t know about picking a winner for the major tournaments but I know that they compete on great  tennis court surfaces to help them perform at their best!
