Verdasco is good, but I don't think he will get to the semi's this year. There are just too many good players in the draw this year, and he is only 9th in the world right now. Also, isn't he mainly a clay court player?
well he did well on both surfaces last year and being ninth in the world gives him a good advantage. but i get what your saying that other players are coming from the horizon, and verdasco is one of them.
Hi tennisguy, welcome to GSFT. Verdasco is a very interesting pick for your Australian Open team. He seems like he is in excellent shape, and he has the skills to become a top 5 player. I think he is very likely to make it to the QFs, but it might take a very good draw for him to get to the Semi's. I have a good feeling about Roddick this year, if he can stay healthy, and Monfils might actually be mature enough to become a threat. Who else do you like this year?
gonzalez and tsonga are two more players who have really shown they have what takes to go far in a grand slam. if gonzalez doesnt have federer in his draw like last year he might have a chance to getting to the quarters like he did in the US Open. as for tsonga, he made it to the finals in 2008, so maybe he'll have his luck again. i still believe nadal can win it all again like last year, if he avoids all injuries. del potro is aalso fresh off a grand slam win so that gives him a big advantage mentally and gamewise.
Soderling, is gonna have a great year this year, and i reckon if he can keep it up, he just might be able to pull off a very very big upset...
i believe he can go far, but i dont think he can go all the way. he still has a lot to learn and enough time to learn it, so i wouldnt get yr hopes up.
Ah, 'who is going to do well in X tournament' dilemma.....
I would say that Verdasco is in great shape, and to look at him on his own he seems a strong player. However, there's just too many people and too much pride thrown into the melee this year for him to really stand out as a clear candidate for a win.
I would say....either a Federer v Nadal final / Federer v DelPo final / Nadal v DelPo final.
But who knows. This new found acting confidence could put Djokovic back in line to reclaim his Aussie title!
the mens draw this year is very unpredictable so all we can do is wait till january 18. also each aussie open has had a breakout star in the tournie, so this year i think that the person will be marin cilic. he hasn't made a huge impact so far, so this may be his chance to shine.
I know Justine Henin will be ready for the Australian Open. She will get at least to the quarterfinals. From there on, it will all depend on the competitors left. If Serena Williams is still on the draw, I am afraid she will defeat Justine.

that could be true, but with serena's tiraid at the u.s. open, i dont know what to expect from her anymore. but she is a good player so hopefully she'll defend her title honorably.
Let's see what happens

Hey, you read my mind. I think Sodering will do great at the Australian this year. He has such a great style of play, and he is mentally tough.
I like Soderling. I did not like the fact he defeated Nadal in the French Open but other than that I feel like he is a very talented player.
he is an up and coming player but i still believe he has a lot to learn. he did make it to the finals of the french, so lets see how he is on hardcourt.
I think it's going to be a good one this year folks!!
In the tournaments that warm the players up for the year, Andy Murray and Laura Robson gave a good turn in the Hopman cup. Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters have already come up against each other, with Clijsters just clinching the win. Davydenko has beaten Roger Federer, and then Nadal. In Abu Dhabi, Robin Soderling pulled another one on Federer, only to fall to Nadal in the final. Sharapova looks very much on form after beating Caroline Wozniacki at an exhibition match in Hong Kong.
Juan Martin del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Verdasco are apparently turning up in Melbourne sometime today to get training under way. Djokovic, Soderling, Gonzalez and Haas are reported to have already been there some time.
And on top of it all, Roger Federer wont be playing in any other match until the opening of the Australian Open on the 18th January. He pulled out of the Kooyong Classic, and so now has no other competitive match until he starts his campaign. He hasnt given any firm reason as to why. So is the Swiss quietly confident? Or still smarting from being beaten by Soderling, again?
Anyway, I can't wait for the whole thing to get under way!
p.s. forgot to mention that Roddick beat Radek to get the Brisbane ATP title, his first in Australia

ya it really is going to be exciting this year. with all the new talent coming on to the tour, who knows whose gonna win the open. i have a strange feeling that its gonna be very shocking.
Does anyone think that Davydenko can keep up the momentum from his ATP Tour Finals win and get to the finals of the Australian? This guy annoys me because he seems to have some real talent, but he is so forgettable. In 2020 will anyone even remember him?
What about Murray? He has not been mentioned much here, and I think he has a good chance to get to the finals.
Hey tennisguy, how about this amazing win for Verdasco over Djokovic in 52 minutes:

what'd i tell you? he can go far in this year's open. and that proved it right there.
Is that Verdasco playing amazing tennis or Djokovic having a mental breakdown?
i sure hope its verdasco doin amazing
Given how well del Potro played at the US Open I think it's his tournament to win or lose. If he can stay mentally healthy I think he can win his 2nd slam.
his u.s open win does give him a lot of momemtum, so we'll have to see if he takes advantage of that
