Expect my blog on the men's finals to be up in the next hour, but I just couldn't wait to start talking about Roger Federer's win today.

What a win. He truly is a champion.

Hey guys.

Now the tournament's really steaming ahead, I was wondering who people thought will eventually come out victor??

Im thinking....Justine Henin and then....Roger Federer.

With wit like that I had better watch out, or you may get my job wink

This was the first I had heard of this, sounds interesting though.

Djokovic's family were big on skiing, his parents were ski instructors and met on the slopes! So who knows, maybe there's a link somewhere between skiing and tennis...

I hope he does well. The whole playoff thing sounds an interesting idea in and of itself!

It was a wrist injury, I think. Got into his head. Sorry I cant be much help, but I only really saw the post-match interview and he said he is off to the doctors to get it checked out again, then he's going to take a bit of a rest.

I thought Delpo would go far too, but I think it is just one of those things. Fingers crossed that the injury is resolved, I love watching him play.

Oh delpo, delpo, delpo. Why?!

Oh well. I've got my fingers crossed forNadal in the quarters. I'm sure no-one is surprised by that.

What do others think?

Ouch Chadshack, that is tough luck to have those two particular players on your team! I don't think anyone saw those two particular howlers coming.

The last time I flew was on Ryanair and the highlight was the selling of some bizarre smokeless cigarettes, so  I am jealous that another airline is showing tennis on their flights! yikes

No, unfortunately I didn't catch the match, but I have read the reports and it sounds thrilling.

Federer seems to be doing this more and more; trailing at the beginning then kicking up to that amazing gear of his. I guess it works, but it does give him some scares, like today,

I hadn't heard anything about him being injured, but I know the end of last year was a bit of a headache for him injury-wise.

I think if he eeps his mind on things, he is a strong contender. Hey, what do I know, I am terrible at predicting! But I am behind him all the way, I hope he does well.

EDIT: oh no wait I had heard he was injured haha.It just shows how saturated with tennis my brain is, things are starting to slip away from me! I still think he could shake off that particular demon, it never kept him out of anything big although I gues it did mess with his warm up. Oh well, we shall see.

We all know the horrors that are going on right now for Haiti, and many of us will have done what we can to help, even if only a little.

Tennis players are like many other sportsmen, they have big hearts and big pockets. Roger Federer organised a completely relaxed, fundraising game to help support the relief effort in Haiti.

The players involved included Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, Serena Williams, Lleyton Hewitt, Roddick, Kim Clijsters, and many more.

The players wore microphones, making the audience and themselves painfully aware of their grunting and groaning, and they played in a couple of mixed doubles and singles matches, sacrificing some of their last minute training to get involved.

I encourage everyone to cehck out the footage on Youtube if you can. This is a great video to start off with, from here they will take you to all the other videos.

I think it's going to be a good one this year folks!!

In the tournaments that warm the players up for the year, Andy Murray and Laura Robson gave a good turn in the Hopman cup. Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters have already come up against each other, with Clijsters just clinching the win. Davydenko has beaten Roger Federer, and then Nadal. In Abu Dhabi, Robin Soderling pulled another one on Federer, only to fall to Nadal in the final. Sharapova looks very much on form after beating Caroline Wozniacki at an exhibition match in Hong Kong.

Juan Martin del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Verdasco are apparently turning up in Melbourne sometime today to get training under way. Djokovic, Soderling, Gonzalez and Haas are reported to have already been there some time.

And on top of it all, Roger Federer wont be playing in any other match until the opening of the Australian Open on the 18th January. He pulled out of the Kooyong Classic, and so now has no other competitive match until he starts his campaign. He hasnt given any firm reason as to why. So is the Swiss quietly confident? Or still smarting from being beaten by Soderling, again?

Anyway, I can't wait for the whole thing to get under way!

p.s. forgot to mention that Roddick beat Radek to get the Brisbane ATP title, his first in Australia

Hopefully! Got my fingers crossed for it. I want to see Davydenko do well this year, he deserves it after his win at the ATP World Tour Finals. And of course Del Potro!....but I've made that quite obvious.

I wonder if they will get the ridiculous scheduling and corporate nonsense sorted out for this year for the US Open. I couldn't believe the farce that was the handling of Juan Martin del Potro's victory speech.

It was a fantastic US Open. I doubt there was anyone who predicted those two final match ups!

Yes the whole year was certainly memorable. I remember after 2008 everyone going on about it being the best Wimbledon, the best year because of the rivalry between Federer and Nadal having reached some heady heights. And yet 2009 rarely had anything to do with the Nadal/Fed rivalry. Just shows how things can change!

From the looks of things, he's a lot happier with this new coach. And he did get to the finals of a grand slam pretty quick with this guy, so it's probably in his best interests to keep him. Also, would gilbert want to be rehired after being unceremoniously dumped? I probably wouldnt want to be!

Yes it was a shame he was physically unfit at the end of this year, he had a good one overall. His first injury was his hip when he fell during that Wimbledon final, which must have been an even bigger kick in the teeth after the final score.

His mental strength is certainly a factor. He often gets frustrated and lets it get to him; something Delpo has also struggled with. But Roddick is a older and more experienced, so he shouldn't really let it take control!

Ah, 'who is going to do well in X tournament' dilemma.....

I would say that Verdasco is in great shape, and to look at him on his own he seems a strong player. However, there's just too many people and too much pride thrown into the melee this year for him to really stand out as a clear candidate for a win.

I would say....either a Federer v Nadal final / Federer v DelPo final / Nadal v DelPo final.

But who knows. This new found acting confidence could put Djokovic back in line to reclaim his Aussie title!

I can't stop raving about the guy, but then I do have a tendancy to become very obsessive about a particular player!

So what do other people think? Does he have the potential to get some more grand slams under his belt? Will he climb the rankings significantly over the next year?

I personally think he's an exciting tennis player who seems like a very lovely guy, someone who has the potential to blow things up in the top 3 in the next few years. I think he could become a true champion, the potential is certainly there.

So: tennis superstar? or one hit wonder? (standing at 6ft 7in Im not sure many people would that pose that question to his face, but at least we are safe here on the forums wink )

Sophie - loved your blog post. What did you think about the rest of the tournament? I am shocked that Davydenko won over del Potro.

Thank you very much.

I am shocked too, nevermind about the end result but that those two guys were squaring up in the finals at all! Ok, you could put money on Delpo getting through, but not Davydenko and Del Potro for sure, not after the semi-finals they had. but if anything I think the tournament just helped to demonstrate del Potro's age. He got that foot fault and it just seem to drag at him. He does get quite frustrated at times anyway (during the semi-finals he seemed to be constantly gnawing on the tennis balls between serves; I bet he regretted that when he brushed his teeth that night), but I think this one got to his head. I think with age and experience, it'll start to become less of an issue for him.

I've never really sat and watched Davydenko play properly; he was like a ferret over that court! He had about ten steps to del Potro's two, but he seemed to cover the court just as well, even better. His tennis racket looked bigger than him, but he definitely knows how to use it.

I was disappointed by the bigger names dropping out so soon, but in the end that is the brilliance of the tournamnet; even they cant get a free ride!

I was very pleased to be able to see Novak Djokovic play, so I will always remember the tournament fondly smile

Even after he lost though, people were bigging Delpo up to be knocking at the top three very soon. I cant believe only a year or so ago only the most studious of tennis fans had heard of him!

p.s. in response to your question kim1, it'll be in England for the next five years: whoopa!! big_smile

Everything time I think more about it I realise that you are completely right! Also managed to get something close to a schedule, which said a doubles match will start at about 12 for aft session and then singles matches would start at 2, implying that a singles match will take place every day, same again in the evening so maybe even two.

Tickets will be booked very, very soon big_smile

I am absolutely desperate to go to the World Tour Finals at the O2 arena in London in November. Saved up and everything smile

But the only tickets that so far aren't sold out for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This makes me suspicious that everybody knows nothing goes on on these days, and I'll turn up to nothing if I buy a ticket for that day. Or maybe a doubles match day, or something. Not that I have anything against doubles, but I don't find them very interesting to watch and I am there to watch the singles guys!

Has anybody been before? Anyone got any idea of the schedule etc, because I cant find one online (probably because not everyone has qualified yet) Im hoping that the days left to buy tickets for arent just dud tickets.

Any thoughts/advice?

I completely agree. His attitude to the game is the only one a champion can have, and it has a public face and a more private face. He never usually behaves like that after a match goes wrong. He let the private face came out today in public, and it didnt suit him.

I agree that he is still one of my favourite players out there. I respect and admire the guy, he brought my interest towards tennis at the very beginning too.

Still, his entire attitude smacked of sour grapes, and as much as I like the guy, you can't help but think he would be a bit nicer to a young rising star as he once was, rather than being so sour. It was a frustrating situation with the umpire, but not every umpire is going to be out there to be your best friend. Roger Federer knows that.

del Potro is a young guy with a lot of game potential left in. He has a wolloping forehand but he does so much with it. His angle, his reach, its amazing. He doesnt chip and volley and scamper around the court too much, but with legs and arms that long he probably has a lot of wind resistance to do that kind of thing! Hes not built to be that kind of player. He could make himself that kind of player, using his height as advantage, I know it's not an excuse, but he obviously feels happy in the way his game his played right now.

Maybe he will mix it up more in the future. Who knows.

Again, I know that Federer is still a champion of champions and a great guy. But still, he was a bit of an idiot in this match and considering he has won five times there he could have been a tad less bitter-sounding.

p.s. oh yes, I know all too well of his dislike of Djokovi smile. He doesnt like the impressions, his injuries, yadda yadda yah. Theres always going to be one guy on the tour another doesnt get along with. tennis players never get to confront each other physically in a match (hand to hand, so to speak), so they know how to have a good cat fight in their post-match interviews.

Ecstatic for del Potro, and not just because I stuck my neck out and say he would win!!

Im so glad he took the title; Federer didn't play his usual towards teh end of the match. del Potro pulled something out of the bag. Amazing play from such a young and so far unexperienced guy.

Wow. Go him.

And I did not like Federer at all during that match. He was so bloody petulant! Going on and on about the line call, thats just not Federer. Swearing at the umpire, that's not like him either. He was good enough to say that best man won but then went into his post-match conference to say, basically, it didnt really matter to him anyway, it would have been nice but oh well I dont NEED it. Ok, maybe the truth, but still. The whole match looked like he was throwing his toys out of the pram.

Fed went down in my books today. Ok he was pretty high so its not too far to drop, I stil admire and respect him as a player, but I didnt like him in this match. Weirdly enough, it looked like he was the one that needed to grow up and DP was the elder player.

I am completely torn as well. As much as I love Federer, del Potro blew me away at the French Open and I have been dying to see him play since then, so I want him to win this final more than Federer.

However, Fed has got such a strong mental position in a final.

Still, I will stick my neck out and say del Potro. Feel free to laugh and point at me later if I end up being completely wrong

The guy who kissed Nadal was arrested for interfering with a sporting event. They could face a year in jail or roughly $50,000 fine.
But Im not sure the guy's fate has been decided yet. Feel quite sorry for him; he seemed quite geniune and Nadal even tried to stop the guards from grabbing him so harshly. But still, it's scary what could have happened.

Yet again, we might as well not do everything if we always finish with 'well, we have to think of what COULD have happened'

(5 replies, posted in US Open)

Cheers for that, just edited it smile I was probably thinking about all the crazy streakers we get at Wimbledon.

Well that's what people feared, he could have done anything and Federer was completely defenceless. The 'what ifs' dont bear thinking of, but maybe the security set up for each tournament should be dwelling on what ifs, because they appear to be very slack.

It was the same with the Nadal incident. He wasn't bothered by it, in fact claimed that the man was a very nice guy, but still he could have been out there to do something a lot less innocent. And this is America, where most events are very tightly secured and watched carefully, so I dont know how he managed it.

Hmmm, thinking about the Monica Sales thing is chilling, isnt it? It does make you worry that something like that could occur again if no-one pays attention to the security issues.
