Yes, Fed is the man. And the tiebreak was excellent - i kept thinking that Murray would win the set and perhaps have a comeback, but Fed held him off and deserved this historic win.

So now he is up to 23 slam semi's in a row. WOW! Think about how amanzing this is. How many players got to the SFs four times in a row? Getting to the semi's eight times in a row would be amazing for any player. He has done it 23 times in a row!!!!! WTF!!!!!

This is what makes Federer the greatest of all time. He is soooooooo consistent and he never gets injured. So many players have one or two great slams, but then go away. I wonder if del Potro will be one of them.

The Australian Open starts in a little over a week. Can Fed get to 23 slam semi's in a row? I think he can do it!

I really hope so. As you can tell from my photo I'm a Fed fan, but I have so much respect for Nadal and their rivalry has added so much to the game. It would be great for them to meet in at least one more slam final. Wonder if that will ever happen again?

Does anyone think that Davydenko can keep up the momentum from his ATP Tour Finals win and get to the finals of the Australian? This guy annoys me because he seems to have some real talent, but he is so forgettable. In 2020 will anyone even remember him?

What about Murray? He has not been mentioned much here, and I think he has a good chance to get to the finals.

No chance, sorry Nadal. But I wish him all the best. He has heart and seems like a very nice guy.

Aiur, that's a great list, but there is only one stat on your list that is more impressive than Fed's achievement: Lance Armstrong's 7 consecutive Tour de France wins. Given the sheer number of people he is competing against and the level of skill of the other riders and the length of the event, it is truly a remarkable achievement. It's also not an elimination tournament, so you are up against over 150 riders from start to finish for 3 grueling weeks! Just thinking about Armstrong's achievement gives me goosebumps.

The other stuff on the list does not compare. Especially the guy who plays squash. Who cares about squash? Might as well have a hopscotch or line dancing stat in there if you are going to include squash.

So I would amend my post to say that Federer's achievement is the 2nd greatest in sports history.

I'm jealous! Have a great time and let us know what matches you see.

It's an interesting point, except the author should point out that if someone challenges less it might mean that they simply agree with the linespeople more. I'm sure that players challenge most of the time when they disagree with the call, but why should they challenge if they agree. Also, it is important to challenge when it will benefit you the most. No need to challenge if you are up 40-0 in the 3rd game of the set - it's better to save your challenges until they will have more impact on the outcome of the match. The article is way too simplistic.

Players should use all they can to honorably win the match, even if that means using the challenge system better than other players. There is nothing wrong with this - it's just smart.

I just want to say congrats to Fed for getting to 22 slam semifinals in a row. I think that this statistic is the greatest achievement in all of sports! This sounds crazy, but think about it. The next person on the list is Lendl with a mere 10 in a row. So you can take Fed's stat, cut it in half, and he still has the record!! What other achievement in sport can you do that with? If you take half of most home runs or hits in baseball there are plenty of players with those numbers. If you take half of the most career yards rushed or most career touchdown passes in football there are plenty of players with those numbers. Same with any stat in golf, basketball, hockey, swimming, etc. Fed has shown a level of skill and consistency that is unmatched in any sport.

I love Fed and I am a huge fan but he was outplayed. Im even surprised he won the 3rd set the way del potro was playing. Its hard to play in your 1st slam final against the best ever, and Im impressed with how del potro kept his composure and played his game at such a high level. Fed will win at least 2 or 3 more slams, so I dont feel that bad for him. no one can win every tournament, and getting to the finals 6 years in a row is a HUGE achievement in itself.

I agree. Hats off to Clijsters for being the amazing comeback and for being the first mom to win a major since 1980!!

It's hard for people in the USA to imagine why this would matter, but in many countries betting on sports is totally legal and this information I guess could be used to sway the odds or alert betters to problems. It's more real time than a news article or blog post, and it can come directly from the players themselves when they are in the locker room or anywhere. It still seems strange to me, but I can see some small reasons for them doing this.

The answer is YES - Fed will win #16!!!! He is in amazing shape, he is mentally strong and confident after winning the last two slams, and most importantly he has won the last 5 US Opens!! He is unstoppable.

He's actually up to 2.8 million fans now! Although somehow Vin Diesel has almost 6 million - ouch.

Especially having twins! I have a 2 year old, and it is very tiring. Although I don't have $80 million to pay for nannies and private jets and 4 luxury hotel rooms and such. It's probably a bit easier for him than a regular dad.

There are some photos of the little ones on his Facebook page:

I totally agree Aiur, I thought that was the end for him. But somehow he managed to get out of that game and pull out an amazing victory. What a close call. Congrats to Roddick for great play.

After the match Federer looked relaxed and composed, as if all he did that day was take a little walk around the grounds. I don't even remember seeing him sweat. Is this guy human? I mean, a normal person would look exhausted after a record setting match like that. It's like the Swiss made him in a lab deep underground.

OK, so he did win his 15th title, but Roddick was a much tougher opponent than anyone thought. Federer was not really challenged until today, but he managed to pull it out even though Roddick was in the zone and playing the match of his life. Well done Roger!

He's a great player, but he is playing along side Federer and Nadal, and they took all of his titles away from him. If he was born a few years earlier he might have had a few more slams under his belt, but that's life.

I totally agree - Sunday will be a historic moment in tennis that will not be repeated until the next time Federer wins a slam. I expect him to win Sunday, and probably at least 2 to 3 more slam titles before the end of his career. So at least 17 to 18 slams in total for Federer before he is done.

Do you think it helped him pull out the win? I wonder if that helps or puts more pressure on him.

According to this article, Serena is up for the challenge:

Williams will win easily - no chance at all for Safina.
