Topic: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

As we know, our beloved (we hope) game here rewards certain things big time.  Others, not so much.

So one of the things you don't get asked is, "Who's going to be in the semis?"

OK.  So who IS going to be in the semis???
(Since I'm posting this, I'll be bold and predict first....[drumroll...])

LADIES & GENTLEMEN, THE SEMI-FINALISTS ARE:

Federer, Roddick, Murray, Nadal

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

Same for me. Fed and Nadal final. Fed wins.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

How sure are you that Fed wins?  I think it's a coin flip.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

Fed has a cake section. Berdych is the only guy in his quarter who can give him a match on grass. Roddick or Djokovic can push him if they are at their best, but I would still bet on Fed.

Rafa has a really tough section. Isner and Soderling can really give him problems. Youzhny has a decent head to head against Rafa as well, even though all his wins are on a hardcourt. And then of course Murray would most likely be waiting in the semis. I think he could truly benefit from England being in the World Cup, as long as they make the knockout stages. Murray would fly in under the radar and wouldn't get the normal, ravenous press, taking off some pressure.

If Fed and Nadal inevitably meet in another 'Slam final, Fed can't lose again. It's clear that his stranglehold on the game is slipping, but he is still the king of grass. I know Nadal beat him in '08, but I still believe Fed is the better player on grass. Nadal's shots do not have the same effect on grass as they do even on a hardcourt, and his shots can be attacked. The only thing that concerns me is Fed's mind. He knows Rafa owns him, and everyone talks about it. He has a huge ego and definitely considers himself the best player ever, and losing to Rafa frustrates him. Sometimes he just looks down in matches against Rafa like he knows he can't beat him. Definitely can't have any of that against Nadal, or he will tear you apart.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

Federer, Tsonga, Roddick, Soderling - I'm going out on a limb by not having Nadal there, but I'm not sure about him thie year on grass.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

Roger, Rafa, Murray & Roddick are semi finalists of Wimbledon. Finalists are as same in 2008, but result will different.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

I can assure you that three of the semi-finalist will be Roger, Roddick, and Soderling...  The third is a toss up... Verdasco, Murray, Tsonga, or a dark horse in this semi...  Nadal will not make it on the grass this year...  Soderling's time has come and he will win it all....

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

I find picking Soderling to win it all quite amusing.

If that actually happened -- it won't, of course, but if it actually did  -- that would be the pick of the decade.

Gotta hand it to jimpicks: he doesn't lack for boldness.  He isn't afraid to go out on a limb.  What's Rafa doing with that ladder and saw?   ;-D

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

If the grass is anything like it used to be at Wimbledon, Nadal will be out before the second round. But I forgot, Wimbledon slowed the grass and balls down to let Nadal and the other baseliners have a chance. If the grass is like the grass of old then Soderling will win it all... "Ladder and saw",  Maybe Nadal is getting ready to clean my cutters or cut down some tree limbs... he certainly will have some extra time these next few weeks..

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

Rafa's going to cut off the limb you crawled out on.  Enjoy your fall.

NO ONE BUT FEDERER HAS BEATEN NADAL AT WIMBLEDON SINCE 2005.

Get a grip.  If Soderling does well, he will lose in the quarters to Rafa.  But he may not make it that far.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

As far as I can tell, pretty much everyone agreed on two semi-finalists: Federer and Roddick.

OMG!!!  Can you believe it?  Roddick out to Lu???

Fed's playing better now, but the match with Berdych will be a difficult one.  Though he was tested by Ferrer, Soderling has been playing great.  So has Tsonga.  So there are good reasons for the split of opinion on Murray/Tsonga and Nadal/Soderling, I must admit.

I'm not a true Lu believer.  I think Djokovic is the only clear semi-finalist at this point.  Obviously, before the tournament, nobody thought that would be the case, and there are some very knowledgeable people competing here.

Very interesting.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

i'm shocked that Lu could pull out that win. that's amazing. i didn't see the match - what happened?

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

Lu likes the ball waist high or a little lower and he hits the ball pretty flat, so his game is made for grass.  Having said that, he's a journeyman player who played the match of his life.  He was on fire.  It was so surprising to him that he never even got nervous.  Meanwhile, Andy didn't think Lu could keep it up, so Andy played conservatively and didn't go for much or take any chances.  His first serve percentage was off.  Still, Lu didn't break his serve until the last game of the match.

Andy said he lost because he returned badly.  True enough, he returned very badly indeed.  However, he lost the match because he was not aggressive once the ball was in play.  He played for Lu to lose instead of playing to win.  Lu did not win the match, though.  Andy lost it through poor play and awful tactics.

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

I would have predicted the same semi-finalists as you Don D before the tournament started.
But know its at the QF stage I can change my predictions somewhat.....lol!
Federer v Djokovic in one semi & Murray or Tsonga v Nadal in the other.
I think the Joker is the only one who I would consider a near cert though, Fed to win in four sets against Berdych,
Djokovic in straight sets over Lu, can't decide between Murray and Tsonga, i'll go for Tsonga in five & Rafa in four sets over Soderling, how does that sound??
I was hoping Roddick would win it all this year but he was slightly off his game and got flushed out by Lu smile)
I would like to see a Fed v Tsonga final but have a feeling it may be the status quo and Roger v Rafa will be on the menu again.
Federer to win the final in four!

Re: POLL: SEMI-FINALISTS

You might have been right about Fed winning it all, Tono, if he had not been injured.  We'll never know.

Your boy Tsonga needs to lose 25 pounds.  He ran out of gas against Murray.  It was ugly.

Berdych lost weight, got in better shape, and not only his movement improved.  So did his attitude, by leaps and bounds.  The same would happen to Tsonga, I think, if he committed to improving his conditioning.

Andy, on the other hand, already did that and it didn't help his mindset.  He's still too passive.  I think he's simply too afraid of making a mistake to seize the moment.
