Topic: So choose three

Folks, please read what's below and respond by posting what you really think.  I want to know.

Of course, the draw hasn't come out, so this is "in a vacuum" rather than in context.  So, in that vacuum, who are the three you like?  BE A SPORT & POST YOUR EARLY THOUGHTS!

I was just spinning down through the top 16 seeds as of this moment -- thinking about the other 3 to take besides the obvious -- seeing who I could eliminate.  Davydenko's just back and to say grass is his worst surface would be like saying Rafa Nadal can play pretty good clay court tennis.  David Ferrer won't contend for the title, though he may well make R16, depending on the draw.  Youzhny, Ljubicic (big serve notwithstanding) and Ferrero, not so much.  Melzer maybe.

So choose three: Djokovic, Murray, Soderling, Roddick, Verdasco, Tsonga, Cilic and Berdych.  AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!

That slate's so strong it almost makes you question including Rafa.  Just kidding.  The reason I ask is I'm not quite sure myself who to pick besides Roddick and Soderling.

Well, but then there's Tsonga.  He could win it all.

And Cilic's serve works so much better on grass.  And Verdasco has always played well at Wimbledon.

But right now Berdych is striking the ball better than anyone.  If his match in Paris with Soderling had been on grass, Tomas would have won.  So not Soderling at all after all.  Or is that wrong?

And, yeah, Murray's been playing like a duffer and there's all that pressure in the U.K. that would kill freakin' Superman, but, gee, his game translates well to grass, especially his touch, and he moves especially well on the surface, and God knows he'd like to make everybody forget Henman.

Oh, my goodness!  I think I left out the #3 player in the world, who has proven his mastery of grass.  My bad.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: So choose three

Murray, Roddick, Cilic.

Re: So choose three

I was hoping for more responses.  My early response is Roddick, Soderling and Berdych.  But that may well change soon.

Re: So choose three

How could you not have Murray? He's pretty much locked for at least a quarter.

Re: So choose three

Yeah, well, I think Murray is "the least of these."  I wonder if that means he will have the Lord's favor.

Re: So choose three

Should Verdasco be included in that list? I have never thought of him as a grass player. I would go for Soderling, Murray, and Djokovic, although I'm not 100% sure about Djokovic. I just don't think that Tsonga can get to the semi finals of Wimbledon this year, and Roddick will play head games with himself and be out before the QFs.

Re: So choose three

Well, in Rafa's absence Roddick DID make the final last year -- and gave Federer quite a tussle.  Roddick has consistently done well at Wimbledon.  Clearly, his serve is the main reason that's so.  For those reasons, Roddick is on my list.

Soderling has clearly been playing better than everybody but the big two.  So based on form, I think Soderling has to be on the list.

For me, in a vacuum (in other words, this may change when I see the draw), it's then Murray, Djokovic and Berdych.  Murray hasn't been playing well and will have all the pressure only the Brits can put on a player.  So I think he may be a dicey pick.  I would probably pick the Djoker if I knew his allergies would leave him alone, but he was suffering in Paris.  So that's how I wound up with Berdych, who has been playing brilliantly pretty much all year, and who has a good serve and lots of power off the ground.

Verdasco has been in R16 at Wimbledon 3 of the last 4 years, including the last two, but has not yet gone further than that, so he is probably the worst pick on the list.  I think both Tsonga and Cilic are potentially more dangerous on grass than Nando.  Really, maybe Verdasco shouldn't be on the list.  The rest, definitely yes.

Re: So choose three

so Murray just lost to Fish today. not a good time to get your morale reduced. wonder how this will play out at wimbledon?

Re: So choose three

Nadal lost to Feliciano Lopez in straights as well. That's after he needed 3 tight sets to beat Denis Istomin. Not the best tuneup event.

Re: So choose three

I think Rafa was tired.  I think Murray is in a bad slump.

I still like Rafa.  I still don't like Murray this year.

Re: So choose three

Interesting results this week.  Not only did Fish beat Murray.  He made the final, where he lost to Sam Querry.  This is a tournament with Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Roddick.

Feliciano Lopez beat Nadal!  Dudi Sela beat Roddick!  Xavier Malisse beat Djokovic!  Wow!

And Lleyton Hewitt beat Federer.

Hmmmm.

Re: So choose three

Definitely some fluke results out there. Gonna have to take a close look at the draw when it comes out, see if any of these shockers can happen again in the early rounds.

Re: So choose three

Yeah.  There may actually be several lower ranked contenders worth looking at.  But it's so strong at the top in the big ones, it's kinda hard to take too many of the outsiders.

But it is certainly dependent on the draw.

Re: So choose three

I don't think anyone wants to face Isner, Berdych or Soderling with their big serves. Isner should have success on the grass, especially if they get some warm days and the ball flies through the air even quicker. I don't see why he can't at least duplicate Dr. Ivo's run last year, especially since he is a better all around player.

Re: So choose three

Isner.  Nice choice.  But Ivo's still scary.  So is Sam Querry.

Don't underestimate Hewitt.  Grass has always been his best surface (oddly enough), so don't do it.

OK.  Here's another one to think about: De Bakker.

Re: So choose three

Is Ivo playing? He didn't play at the French or London/Halle, so I assumed he had some sort of illness/injury. I don't know much about De Bakker, but isn't clay his best surface?

Re: So choose three

Absolutely right about Ivo.  He withdrew from the French due to injury.  I have seen no report anywhere on the nature of that injury.  However, he has not played since Madrid.  I would think it unlikely that he will play Wimbledon, since whatever is wrong was serious enough to keep him out of the French and the grass tune-ups.  So many injuries it's hard to keep up with them all.

I was actually joking about De Bakker, to be honest.  I do think he's an up-and-comer whose game has the potential to work on all surfaces, but you're right, now he's best on clay.  If I was trying to make a point by mentioning him, it's that there are so many good players (and Thiemo's one of the less well-known ones) that a lot of the guys in the draw will have a reasonable shot at making R16.  It's competitive out there.

Re: So choose three

Now that I picked my team, only one of my three early picks was on my final list!

How 'bout that!?!  The draw that picked itself.
