Topic: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

Pretty big news, because this injury sounds serious. This isn't the usual tendinitis that he has dealt with for a couple years, and I believe it was described as an "acute pain." This has been a concern for a lot of people regarding Rafa, because of the intense physical nature of his play. Depending on if he even enters Wimbledon, it could open up the draw for someone like Murray or Roddick.

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

But theres mixed reports. Some say its serious enough to keep him out, others say he will rest it and be ready for Wimbledon. I think we will just have to wait and see.

I think it will be Federer's tournamnet if so, and i doubt the guys like Murray or Roddick with do immensley well. Murray will have British backing and that will probably drive him to semi-finals but I cant see him going beyond that. I think once again it will be the lesser known names, the del Potros and Soderlings and Gonzalezs of the rankings that will shine through once again. They have less to lose, less pressure. Murray is weighted down by ridiculous British expectation.

Still I'm still hoping Nadal can play, fingers crossed he will be fit and well.

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

Even if Nadal plays Wimbledon his concern about his knee will hinder his play. As a result he has no chance to make it more than a few rounds, and he risks a more serious injury. But at least the grass is easier on his knee - the hard courts at the US Open will do some damage.

Apparently he is going to get it checked out and then decide if he is going to play Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

Last I heard (yesterday): he is travelling to London 16 June, so that looks good. Although he says hes reluctant to play if he cant give 100%.

So far its tendonitis and a bit of fluid in the kneecaps apparently. Sounds painful! But fingers crossed that he can play!!

Here is an update on Nadal and his very famous knees:

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

He lost to Hewitt today 4 and 3. He will make a decision on Wimbledon tomorrow after he plays my man Stan Wawrinka. Just based on the Hewitt loss, it isn't looking good.

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

Rafa won't play Wimbledon. Sad news, but I think an even bigger story could be brewing at Flushing Meadows in August. I think Rafa will go into the US Open 100% healthy for the first time, and it could be possible to see Federer and Nadal get the career Grand Slam in the same year.

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

I am really disappointed! But on the other hand, it's better for him to get rest and recover for future tournaments.

Still...it'll be strange without him!

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

I wonder why he waited until the draw was released before dropping out? I'm sure the folks at Wimbledon were not happy about that. Right now there is no #1 seed because they still have Federer as #2. It's too bad he could not play, but it sounds like he would not have made it too far anyway (he lost to Hewitt in a warm up event this week, and Hewitt is normally not in his league).

Re: Rafa's knee might hurt his chances of defending Wimbledon

He waited until he played two warm-up matches: one against Hewitt on Thursday, and one against Wawrinka yesterday (when the draw was released).
