Topic: Tennis Player To Shrink Beasts To Improve Performance...

I had to throw this in here...

A Romanian player has decided to she needs to get a breast reduction to improve her court mobility.

So my (not very serious) question is -

Should she be allowed to do this or is it considered performance enhancing surgery, akin to something like blood or gene doping.

Read all her about her troubles here

She may find she loses a few fans anyway...

Im not sure if its akin to doping, but it shows her, um, dedication!

Re: Tennis Player To Shrink Beasts To Improve Performance...

Wow, that is interesting. I guess this would be seen as cosmetic surgery instead of performance enhancing - more like a facelift. But it raises an interesting question. What if a swimmer makes their feet bigger, but not bigger than the feet of the largest swimmers in the competition? The foot is enhanced, but it is not enhanced beyond human size.

Re: Tennis Player To Shrink Beasts To Improve Performance...

It's certainly interesting....that's right you could argue it's cosmetic and therefore a personal thing, like getting a mole removed. Except quite a bit more than a mole...

But then again she is also removing a problem in her game beyond the normal parameters of training, diet modification etc; its obviously a problem enough that she'll have surgery for it, so fixing it may be seen as pushing the boundaries a bit.

Like a swimmer that has flipper surgically installed in place of their feet!?!   Maybe after the breast reduction she can have a racket surgically implanted in place of her arm and hand.

Re: Tennis Player To Shrink Beasts To Improve Performance...

There is an actual case of someone with artificial legs who almost got into the olympics. There was a lot of debate over this and if this would be fair to competitors with human legs. Here is an article on him:

Yeah I remember seeing that guy run a few times - I was always amazed at his balance on those things. It looked like he was going to topple every time he hit the bend.

Re: Tennis Player To Shrink Beasts To Improve Performance...

I heard a radio show about that guy. While many thought the legs gave him an advantage and made it unfair, an expert who studied him said that he was actually at a disadvantage and it was amazing that he could compete at that level. It's interesting how people just assumed that it was an advantage.
