Of course Djokovic's breathing problem isn't his fault. It is real, however, and I think it has adversely effected his play off and on. It certainly would adversely effect his fitness in a long match.

No doubt the Madrid SF last year was brutal and took a lot out of both players. Madrid is very different from the other European clay tourneys because of the altitude and the terrible conditions. Nonetheless, Djokovic did very well to play Rafa essentially dead even there.

Djokovic also took a set from Rafa at Monte Carlo last year -- and Monte Carlo is most like Roland Garros. Nadal won 6-3 2-6 6-1. In between Monte Carlo and Madrid, Rafa beat Nole 7-6 6-2 at Rome. In three attempts ('06-08), Nole has not won a set from Rafa at the French Open. In 9 matches on clay, Nole has won 3 sets to Rafa's 21 sets. Though, like Soderling against Federer, he will probably beat Rafa on clay eventually.

But Rafa is much tougher on clay than he is on hard courts. The reverse is true of Djokovic. And, though Nole is undeniably a very tough clay court player. Rafa and Borg stand alone as the greatest clay court players of all time. So I'm glad a smart observer like you, Aiur, picked Nadal to win. The race is not always to the swift, nor the fight to the strong, but that's the way to bet, as the old saying goes.

I never said Novak was going to win the match (I have Nadal winning it all). I simply said Novak has the game that gives Nadal troubles on all surfaces. He has taken Nadal to three sets on clay three or four times, and he has played a bunch of tight sets against him at the French. I also can't figure out why you are hating on Novak for having a legit medical condition. It's not his fault.

Usually, I think you may be related to Yoda. On this, you're out to lunch. Take your silly little Djoker if you will, but Rafa will be in the final against the winner of the titan slugfest.

Now that I think about it further, why are you so focused on how "off" Nadal has allegedly been when you utterly ignore the fact that your little Djoker has barely been able to breathe. He has looked miserable in more ways than one. As I said before, lucky draw, Novak.

Djokovic plays Nadal extremely tough on clay. I remember last year the 4 hour marathon at Madrid and another three setter at Rome or Monte Carlo. Sure, he has lost confidence on his serve, but clay is the surface where the serve is least effective. If he can hit some nice groundies, I give him a nice chance.

Djokovic certainly hasn't looked all that good so far. Melzer has seemed the superior player to Novak this French Open, truth be told.

In fact, Djokovic has played the worst of any of the final 8 so far. The only reason he got this far was because he had such a soft draw. Youzhny would have beat him if they'd played last round. Soderling or Berdych or Almagro would have issued him a beat down. Novak might have beat Wawrinka. Maybe.

He may lose to Melzer. But he may well beat Melzer because of the occasion and Melzer's inexperience on the big stage. Either way, whoever wins, no chance against Rafa. No chance to take it to 5. Maybe win a set, maybe not.

By the way, Nadal leads the head to head with the Djoker 14-7. More interesting is that the Djoker leads on hard courts 7-3, including the last 3. On grass, it's Nadal 2-0. On clay? 9-0 Nadal. No miracles for Novak at RG this year.
Both Soderling and Berdych have a legit chance against Rafa because they're tall, not bothered by the high bounce much. They hit real hard on most of their shots. It's the ONLY way to beat Rafa on clay. It's a matter of doing it consistently against Nadal's bounce, which varies and really grabs the clay. That's not so easy. Legit chance? Yes.

But there's a reason Rafa hasn't lost a match on clay this year.
I honestly think Djokovic has the all around game to beat Nadal if he's on and Nadal is playing like he did against Bellucci.

Soderling will have his hands full with Berdych. Should be a great match. They're both playing about as aggressively as possible and being consistent doing it.

What a wonderful victory for Soderling today. He was going for it every time he hit the ball and yet was consistently making his shots. No one would have beaten him today. He was great.

Whoever wins between Soderling and Berdych will be the aggressor against Nadal. Either of them is capable of blowing Rafa off the court if they play nearly perfectly. Still, I like Nadal to win it all.

My predictions for this year are in absolute shreds and tatters. This prediction malarky is tricky!

I can't believe what Soderling has managed to achieve, I really didn't give him much of a chance.

Nadal/Soderling? I can't see Rafa being sent home before the finals.

Unless....

Yeah, but I'll believe Soderling can beat Fed when I see him believing it -- and I haven't seen that yet. Personally, I hope he does believe it, because he can beat Fed the exact same way he beat Nadal last year. When he's hitting out on it and it's going in, he can blow anybody off the court.

It's great to see anyone play with that much courage and have it work -- especially a guy who used to be a bit of a hothead and given to imploding. He has come a remarkably long way, and his conditioning has a lot to do with it. It's what allowed him to become more consistent. So it's nice to see hard work and an improved attitude rewarded that way. I'd like to see Nadal beat Soderling in the final.

Soderling did beat Fed at Abu Dhabi in an exhibition just prior to the event in Doha, but yea, Fed has dominated. Soderling seems to have the consistency in his game that he lacked for years, and he seems to have matured nicely. If he can hit the ball deep and rob Fed of time to use his shot making skills, Soderling has a great chance.
