Nadal's New Look

This just in:

Rafael Nadal has abandoned his trademark sleeveless tops and capri pants for T-shirts and above-the-knee shorts at this year’s Australian Open.

Apparently sports bloggers and fan forums have been puzzled by this new attire, with at least one female blogger complaining that she "missed seeing his sculpted biceps."

Are you kidding me?
There are actually people writing/thinking about this?

gimme a break!

OZ Officiating

Oz Thumbs Down: Officiating

by Pete Bodo

Last October, the Australian Sports Commission issued a public statement offering "Applications. . . for 2012 National Officiating Scholarships." The benefits were to include "frequent practical officiating. . .under the guidance of an experienced mentor," as well as "exposure to high-level officiating and related debriefings," and "attendance at seminars and conferences."

While it's nice (or a little creepy) to know that the Australian government is deeply vested in the critical field of sports officiating, and has brought all of its bureaucratic tools to bear on the effort (if anyone has any idea what "development pathways and initiatives developed and implemented by participating NSOs" means, please write!), it's also pretty clear that few, if any, of the linespersons at the Australian Open had availed themselves of those plum scholarships.

Or if they did, they may have spent less time practicing line calls than hobnobbing at seminars and "debriefings" (Why do I have a funny feeling that that's code for: Everyone meet in the hotel bar at six, woo-hoo!).

The officiating at the Australian Open was just awful.

Usually, officiating is one of those subjects wise pundits and commentators just leave alone. Nobody, but nobody, wants a tennis match to be about officiating, and certainly not errors or controversies. But at times it seemed like this entire tournament was about just that. One enduring image from the men's final is either player, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, casting imploring looks at chair umpire Pascal Maria, hoping for some sort of comfort.

To his credit, Maria appeared to understand that this can be a slippery slope; a chair umpire who feels obliged to vigorously assert his overrule privileges is just asking for trouble that can come in many forms, from accusations of favoritism toward one player to overplaying his hand and blowing a few calls.

Besides, that's ultimately why the Hawkeye electronic line-calling system is there—as a court of last resort. Do we really want to see a linesman overruled by the umpire, then witness Hawkeye overruling the overrule? That's just what happened in the John Isner v. David Nalbandian match—almost.

Kader Nouni, the chair umpire in that one, refused Nalbandian's request to have an overrule reviewed (it certainly looked like a bad overrule by the chair umpire in replay), because he didn't issue the challenge soon enough. It may have cost Nalbandian the match.

But the officiating was error-strewn throughout the tournament, on occasions large and small, and you have to wonder why. My own feeling is that we may be feeling an unintended consequence of the shift to electronic line-calling by way of Hawkeye. I'm a fan of the system, but the little computerized overseer has taken us on a crazy, often counter-intuitive joyride.

One of the first, surprising dividends of Hawkeye was the way it empowered the chair umpire, instead of greatly reducing his importance. If a chair umpire is less inclined to jump in and overrule because of the existence of Hawkeye, he's also become a much more active if informal mediator on court.

The first reaction of a player who thinks he got hooked now is often to look to the. . . chair umpire. He or she wants to know how the chair ump saw it, and even if there's no overrule (it's too late by then anyway), the player will read the umpire's reactions as either a signal to challenge or let the call go. In that sense, Hawkeye has brought the umpire further into the match in an unprecedented way.

But could it also be that Hawkeye is making line callers, well, lazy? A sleepy Aussie who missed the seminars could very easily decide it wouldn't hurt anything if he just relaxed a bit in his chair at two- sets-all. No worries, mate, we have an umpire there to overrule in the event I miss something, and then there's also the big boss, good old Hawkeye!

Because of the utter lack of confidence in the officials, aided perhaps by the chair umpires' reluctance to become too involved, in the late stages of the tournament we came face to face a few times with the nightmare Hawkeye scenario—a player, having expended all his challenges in a fit of justifiable paranoia of poor calls, losing a huge match because he was unable to challenge an obviously erroneous call.

If nothing else, the lords of tennis ought to read linespersons the riot act, and review the job description with chair umpires—not all of whom are as capable as Maria. Down in Oz, though, perhaps they should let the conferences wait and start with mandatory eye examinations for all.

I was able to get in touch with TennisDrawChallenge through twitter, and they were quick to fix the rules page. http://www.tennisdrawchallenge.com/home/rules

There are over 20 bracket events that they cover, prizes are offered for every single one. I've got Arvis, Don and Tony on board, BHP was interested but I haven't heard anything about it from him since he mentioned the link not working for him. I haven't sent an e-mail to the rest yet, but if you guys are reading and interested in joining then send me an e-mail and I'll invite you to the group.

REPEAT! PRIZES FOR EVERY TOURNAMENT INCLUDING SMALL TOURNAMENT BRACKETS SUCH AS ROTTERDAM AND BASEL

The points system is 2 for every 1st round correct pick, add two points awarded for every subsequent round (4 in the 2nd, 6 in the 3rd, 8 in the 4th), and goes up to 14 for picking the winner. I'm not sure how this works for the 5-6 round tournaments, we'll see soon enough with Rotterdam.

HSBA Release Odds For Australian Open Yoda Cup & 2012 Yoda Guru Race!

The Han Solo Betting Agency have today released their opening betting Odd's for both the 2012 Australian Open "Yoda Cup" competition and the Grand Slam season competition race to become the inaugural "Yoda Cup Guru" in 2012!

Head Bookie Mr Chew Bucka stated that "The opening Grand Slam tournament of the year in Melbourne, Australia always brings with it lots of excitement and expectation!"
"All Yoda Cup competitor's start fresh and on an even playing field and they will all be keen I'm sure to perform well and get off to a good start in 2012, especially this year though, since all points won at every Grand Slam event will accumulate and eventually decide who will be awarded the inaugural title of the prestigious Yoda Cup Guru!" said Bucka. :)

Mr Bucka, affectionately known as Chewie, also stated that "us bookies always find it difficult to set the opening odds for the first Grand Slam event of the new season, it's because we don't have any current form to go by so a big part of our criteria is based on historical performance in previous competitions."
"And of course this year we also have the 4 Grand Slam Yoda Cup Guru race to add to the puzzle so it causes a few more headaches than normal for us, nothing that can't be fixed by a Pivo or two though." said Chewie. ;)

Chewie, the hairy top dog from the HSBA also stated that " We believe this year's Australian Open has the ability to become a wide open race and cost us quite a bit of money!"
"Of course as a betting agency we are hoping that our predictions are fairly accurate and that we don't suffer too much monetary damage from large investments being placed on a dark horse or two, I'm not overly confident that will not eventuate though".
"And of course any so-called outsiders who perform well in Melbourne will then have made a great start in the Yoda Guru race so it's a double edged sword for us which the HSBA are obviously a little nervous about" said Chewie. :/

The HSBA have installed joint favourites for the Australian Open Yoda Cup 2012 competition with last years two Yoda Cup Champions Aiur from Philadelphia and the well performed “kiwi” from New Zealand ,Tono, being the bookies popular pick to etch their name on the Cup for a second time.

The Oklahoma resident Don slots in on the second line of betting, although serious questions still remain unanswered as to whether or not he will even compete.
On the third line of betting we have another duo with the 27 year old Serbian Dragan and young Australian CrossCourt unable to be separated on odds for this tournament by the bookmakers.

Backhandpass, the 48 year old Wisconsin resident and early season fronrunner in the Vader League follows next on the fourth line of betting with bookies deciding that his current picking form is obviously too good to ignore.
The youngster of the group and the newcomer from Texas, The Lost Scot, is on the fifth line of betting and his best result in the history of the GSFT competiton has seen his odds kept safe by the bookies first up.

The popular Yoda Crew member Arvis is next on the sixth line of betting, bookies remain wary of the young 23 year old from the fictional town of Narshe but he is still at longer odds.
GSFT administrator Charles comes in on the seventh line of betting and could be one for longer odds in Melbourne as he has a wealth of experience in playing the game.
Last season's well performed Vader Trophy competitor Wolmas is next sitting eighth on the betting line, he has yet to convince the bookmakers of his form in this format of Fantasy Tennis so he remains an outside chance in their opinion.

Adrian, the very quiet member of the Yoda Crew, is considered unlikely to make a charge for the title in Melbourne and will start ninth on the betting line, he will start the competition with as much chance as anyone else, although the bookies don't think so.
And on the tenth and final betting line we have the GSFT blogger extraordinaire Sophie, she is making her debut in the Yoda Cup competition and has been installed as the rank outsider for the opening event of the season, it's up to her to now prove the bookmakers wrong.

The odds for the season long Yoda Cup Guru race in 2012 are very similar to the opening odds for the Australian Open in Melbourne with last season's accumlated points being used as a guide by bookmakers.
Tono has been installed the early favourite to win the Yoda Cup Guru title followed by Don and then Aiur, Dragan and Backhandpass share the fourth line of betting with Arvis slotting in next.

CrossCourt comes in on the sixth line of betting followed by Charles and then the young debutant The Lost Scot.
Wolmas and Adrian have been inserted in at ninth and tenth respectively on the betting line to win the inaugural Yoda Guru title and the position of rank outsider goes to Sophie who sits in the eleventh and final spot in the pecking order of betting, according to the bookmakers.

All odds will be revised, updated and released again at the completion of Week 1 of the tournament, updated odds will then remain in place until the end of the tournament, bets can be made and will be taken right up to the start of the first Quarterfinal match, good luck everybody and remember to invest wisely! ;)

Note: All Yoda Crew members have a maximum of $100 to invest on the player or players of their choice!
The person with the best return on investment at the end of the Australian Open tournament will be awarded the title of “Yoda Vegas”!!

The Opening Odds for the respective competitions are as follows :

Australian Open 2012 Draw Analysis!

Now that the draws are out, what do you guys think are some interesting first-rounders or possible later round clashes?

I am DEVASTATED that Mardy Fish and Gilles Muller drew each other in the first round! Two of my favorite guys! No matter, Muller hasn't been playing well over the last few weeks and probably would have crashed out to just about anybody, but still. I'll definitely be interested in seeing this match, though, if possible.

Dolgopolov vs. Tomic in Round 3 should be highly entertaining!

On the women's side, I really think Zheng Jie has the potential to go deep, except she's in Kvitova's quarter. Kvitova has the kind of game that Zheng really just isn't built to beat. I think Zheng is going to shock a lot of people when she upsets Marion Bartoli in Round 3. You heard it here first.

Also, look for little-known Mandy Minella to give Sharapova all she can handle in round 2! Possibility for biggest early-round upset here.

Australian Open 2012 Racket Bracket!

http://www.tourneytopia.com/RacquetBracketAussieOpenATP/Arvis/Default.aspx

The AO itself is hosting a weird sort of "pick 'em" through their official site, but no bracket.

I thought with the success of the Obi Wan Cannoli at the US Open, we could try and do something similar for this tournament!

I posted this request in an earlier discussion about the avatar- definitely the wrong place, needed to do new request. Sorry about the mix-up!

My avatar for the home page shows, but it does not transfer to the forum discussion page. Is there something special I need to do to have it show in both places? Oh, I see my avatar does not show on this page, either. What can I do to have it show on all pages I post?

By the way, I am new to this fantasy board. It is such fun to play fantasy, here. I like the set up with the players and the sections; that is so sophisticated, and it is user-friendly to boot. I love the opportunity that is possible when the fourth round picks begin. And, I love the opportunities to grab bonus points. I am enjoying this fantasy board. Thanks for creating it and allowing so many of us to join the fun.
