The next wave of young players

Hard to consider players like Del Po, Murray, Nadal and Djokovic old, but there is a new wave of younger players starting to emerge on the circuit. Most notably are Richard Berankis, Bernard Tomic, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov. Berankis, Tomic and Raonic are all in the 3rd round of the Aussie Open (Ranoic is up two sets on Youzhny as I type this) and Dimitrov was dismissed by Stan Wawrinka who is playing some great tennis so far this tourney. There's a possibility these 4 guys could bust onto the scene like Murray, Del Po, and Djokovic did 3+ years ago.

The most notable of these 4 guys is Grigor Dimitrov. He's been hailed as the next Fed. It sounds crazy, but after watching some of his matches, you can see why people are saying it. When you look at Dimitrov play, it's like watching Federer from 9+ years ago (minus the crying antics of Fed). Just about everything Dimitrov does is a direct copy of Fed. Dimitrov still has a lot to work on, most notably the return of serve, but with refinement it's not hard to imagine this guy winning some 'Slams.

If these guys pan out, the period of tennis from 2004-2020 or so might be considered as the best ever.

So what do other people think? Does he have the potential to get some more grand slams under his belt? Will he climb the rankings significantly over the next year?

I personally think he's an exciting tennis player who seems like a very lovely guy, someone who has the potential to blow things up in the top 3 in the next few years. I think he could become a true champion, the potential is certainly there.

So: tennis superstar? or one hit wonder? (standing at 6ft 7in Im not sure many people would that pose that question to his face, but at least we are safe here on the forums ;) )

Its time for Djokovic, Tsonga and obviously Nadal (whose already in his prime) to assert themselves.
I just want to say congrats to Fed for getting to 22 slam semifinals in a row. I think that this statistic is the greatest achievement in all of sports! This sounds crazy, but think about it. The next person on the list is Lendl with a mere 10 in a row. So you can take Fed's stat, cut it in half, and he still has the record!! What other achievement in sport can you do that with? If you take half of most home runs or hits in baseball there are plenty of players with those numbers. If you take half of the most career yards rushed or most career touchdown passes in football there are plenty of players with those numbers. Same with any stat in golf, basketball, hockey, swimming, etc. Fed has shown a level of skill and consistency that is unmatched in any sport.

Interesting Op-Ed in the New York Times today suggesting that Federer is savvy for challenging line calls more often and that other players should make use of the available 3 challenges per set. I can see how this could be a good strategy, though generally it relies on "calculated strategery" to win points instead of sheer skill so I'm not sure I'm totally on the same page. What are others' thoughts?

So he already has 4 titles at the French, 1 at Wimbledon and 1 at Australia. He is 22 years old. I think he easily breaks Pete's record if he doesn't hurt himself (which is a good possibility because he plays so physical). These are the totals I think he will end with at the least:

Australian Open - 4
French Open - 8
Wimbledon - 3
US Open - 3

It is my true belief that Rafa will end up as the best player ever when he retires. He is untouchable on clay, and his game on hard courts and grass has improved tenfold. He plays every point like he is match point down, and he just imposes his will on his opponents. In the long term, the only guys I see competing with him are Murray, Djokovic, Monfils (if he ever fully develops his game) and Tsonga (if he stays healthy). Your thoughts?
