Wawrinka & Kerber Enjoy Further Grand Slam Success

Sep 12, 2016

The 2016 US Tennis Open has concluded in fine style with two brand new champions being crowned, Stan Wawrinka in the men’s singles championship and Angelique Kerber in the women’s singles championship, both players have tasted Grand Slam success previously with Wawrinka winning the Australian Open in 2014 and the French Open in 2015 while Kerber added to her 2016 Australian Open title earlier in the year, Wawrinka defeated the defending champ and world No.1 Novak Djokovic in four sets in the men’s final while Kerber edged out surprise US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova in a tight three sets contest.

Stan the man lived up to his other nickname of the “Stanimal” against Djokovic in the men’s decider at Flushing Meadows, the Swiss world No.3 again showed why he is one of the most dangerous players in the world when he gets his game going, after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Wawrinka used his firepower off the ground to subdue Novak who is regarded by most as the best returner in the game, Stan is now unbeaten in Grand Slam finals having won all three that he has played in, two of those have been against Djokovic, with Wawrinka having now won three of the four major title’s the Swiss right-hander now has a chance to complete a career Grand Slam by winning Wimbledon in the future, but for now he will definitely enjoy this US Open championship I’m sure.

Kerber has had a career best season in 2016, making the final at three of the four majors and winning two of the them, she bookended the season nicely by toppling Pliskova in New York after being crowned the champion in Melbourne earlier in the year, her impressive runner-up finish to Serena at Wimbledon was also noteworthy and Angie fully deserves to now be ranked the new No.1 in women’s tennis, her goal going forward must be to now try and stay on top of the women’s game which will be an on-going challenge for the German 28 year old.

The completion of the US Open in New York always brings an end to the Grand Slam tennis season, it has been another exciting year of tennis for all tennis fans, we now all look forward to what the 2017 season will bring.
