Safarova Earns Her Shot At A Maiden Grand Slam Title

Jun 5, 2015

Lucie Safarova will play her first Grand Slam singles final in Paris on Saturday when she will square off against the world No.1 Serena Williams to see her earns the right to be called the women’s Roland Garros champion for 2015, Safarova has not dropped a set throughout the entire tournament and she displayed her new found belief in dispatching defending champion Maria Sharapova in the fourth round before beating another former champion in the form of Ana Ivanovic in the semi-finals, the 28 year old Czech left hander has also made the final of the women’s doubles competition with her partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands to complete a memorable two weeks in Paris.

Now that Lucie has made the big dance, can she go one step further and beat Williams in the French Open final to end a remarkable two weeks of tennis for the Czech, she has two main things going in her favour right now, first of all Serena is still suffering the effects of being ill with the flu which has to affect the 19-time Grand Slam champion’s preparation for the final surely, secondly, Safarova is in the form of her life right now and she just has to focus and maintain it for one more match, however going against Lucie is the fact that Serena holds a 8-0 head to head record against her and Williams’ experience of being in a final some 23 times previously will surely count at some stage throughout the match.

The biggest thing Safarova needs to have going into the final is self belief, Lucie has to first believe that she can beat Serena and then she has to back up that belief with an unnerving display of high quality tennis, if Safarova believes she can win then she is halfway to Grand Slam glory, Serena has been here many times before however and the American will sense any doubts from across the other side of the net if the Czech starts to falter at all, if Williams is still suffering from the effects of flu like symptoms then Safarova may never get a better shot at winning a Grand Slam singles crown, she will either embrace that opportunity or it will weigh her down, we will soon find out.
