A Serena v Maria Final Looking Likely In Melbourne

Jan 28, 2015

We are now down to four women left in the women’s singles championship at the 2015 Australian Open, the respective top two seeds, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, the 10th seed Ekaterina Makarova and the unseeded American teenager Madison Keys, Williams and Sharapova have survived as expected to reach the last four, but it has been the deep run of both Makarova and Keys that has caught the eye in Melbourne over the past ten days, Makarova will square off against her Russian compatriot Sharapova in the first semi-final on Rod Laver Arena before Serena, the tournament favourite, does battle with her 19 year old compatriot Keys in the second semi-final straight after, it is certainly looking like a Serena/Maria final in Melbourne this year but can Makarova and/or Keys cause a boilover by toppling one of the favourites to make their first Grand Slam final?

A win by either Makarova or Keys would be a major surprise in Melbourne but the women’s game is renowned for upsets so it’s not out of the realms of possibility that Williams or Sharapova could be toppled, an off day or an unfortunate injury could easily derail the two respective multiple Grand Slam champs from their likely match-up in the women’s championship decider on Saturday, however Serena and Maria are multiple Grand Slam champs for a reason and the experience of being there before will certainly give them the edge, Makarova will be playing in only her second major semi-final and Keys will be debuting in the last four of a major championship for the first time, Sharapova has an imposing 5-0 head to head record against Makarova while the 34 year old Williams will be meeting the 19 year old Keys for the first time, everything is certainly pointing towards a showdown between the world No.1 and 2 for the title in Melbourne, will we see an upset in either semi-final, or will the women’s finale be the one that the majority of people predicted prior to the tournament, we will find out in less than 24 hours.
