Serena Shooting For GS No.18

Sep 5, 2014

World No. 1 Serena Williams will finally get a chance to notch up Grand Slam title No.18 in New York on Sunday when she faces her good friend and tournament tenth seed Caroline Wozniacki in the women’s championship decider, both players have been in fine form throughout these Championships and they will square off for the tenth time in their respective careers to see who will claim the title of US Open champion, Serena currently holds a lopsided 8-1 head to head record over Caroline but the two matches they have played against each other this year indicate that the final could be anything but one-sided, Williams came back from first set deficit’s against Wozniacki recently in both the Montreal and Cincinnati events so the final could be poised for another three-setter perhaps.

Serena will want to continue to write her name into the history books while Caro will be keen to put the focus on her private life behind her completely by claiming her first Grand Slam title, the added intrigue in this match is that both women are good friends off the court, Williams pledged her help and friendship to Wozniacki throughout the much publicised relationship break-up between the Dane and golfer Rory McIlroy earlier this year, somehow I don’t think either women will be thinking of helping the other when they take the court in the Championship decider on Sunday, friendship will be parked while they battle for Grand Slam glory.

So, who is your pick for the title and why? Is it merely a case of Serena playing well and winning or does Wozniacki have a decent shot at Grand Slam glory here, the 24 year old Dane is fit and fully focused and her recent hard fought losses to Williams must give her a degree of confidence heading into the match, however this is a US Open final and Serena has already tasted finals success at Flushing Meadows on five separate occasions, Wozniacki has been to the big dance in New York only once before, way back in 2009 when she was beaten to the title by Kim Clijsters, the bookies will have Serena as the hot favourite but after her disappointing performances at the majors so far this year nothing is guaranteed, let’s hope that both women play to their potential and it’s a fitting finale to a great fortnight of women’s tennis, if they both produce their best then I’m picking Serena will notch up Grand Slam No.18 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
