Novak & Petra Reign Supreme At Wimbledon

Jul 6, 2014

As the dust settles on The Wimbledon Championships of 2014, tennis fans finally have a chance to catch their breath after a pulsating fortnight of fantastic grass court tennis, SW19 had many different storylines this year but at the end of the two weeks only two singles champions were left to parade the spoils of victory, they were Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic, Novak and Petra reigned supreme at the All England Club in 2014 but both players had their share of drama before they eventually got their names engraved on the respective trophies.

Novak had his hands full in a tense semi-final clash with the rising Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov and then had to regroup against Roger Federer in a high quality championship decider which went the distance, Petra was only two points away from being dumped out of the tournament in the third round by the resurgent former champion Venus Williams, the left-handed Czech survived that scare and then blasted her way to title number two at Wimbledon with some devastating power-hitting in the final against the hapless Eugenie Bouchard, the respective champions certainly had to overcome their fair share of adversity before claiming their title’s.

Djokovic’s dramatic victory over the seven-time Wimbledon champ Federer was a classic way to end a great tournament, we saw the rise and rise of the up and coming younger brigade of Dimitrov and his fellow semi-finalist Milos Raonic in the men’s tourney, and the continued rise to prominence of Romania’s Simona Halep and the beaten finalist Bouchard in the women’s championship, mix that in with the early upsets of the two respective world No.1′s Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams and the tournament certainly provided plenty for all tennis fans in 2014.

Djokovic has regained the world No.1 ranking from Nadal after winning his 7th Grand Slam title and his second Wimbledon crown, while Kvitova climbs to No.4 in the WTA rankings after capturing her second Wimbledon championship in four years, what a great two weeks of tennis we experienced at The All England Club once again, congratulations to both Novak and Petra on again being crowned champion at SW19.
