Plenty Of Contenders At Wimbledon 2014

Jun 22, 2014

The Championships at Wimbledon in 2014 are about to get underway in London, England and this year it seems there is plenty of contenders in both the men’s and women’s singles championships, the men’s big four of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer are all previous champions at SW19 and they all have strong credentials which see them as favoured contenders for a title run again this season, add to that the likes of former finalist Tomas Berdych, Australian Open champ Stan Wawrinka, young up and comers Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and Kei Nishikori along with the unpredictable Ernests Gulbis and there are plenty of potential storylines in the men’s championship in 2014.

The women’s championship will again have Serena Williams as the favourite but the world No.1 is yet to make it to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam event this season, we will soon find out whether the five-time former champion will be motivated to go all the way again in London and claim her sixth Wimbledon crown, there will be plenty of ladies lining up to challenge Serena this year, especially after her early defeat at the French Open to Garbine Muguruza, Roland Garros champ Maria Sharapova will be eager to try and go back to back, Li Na will be hoping for a form reversal after her disappointing French Open exit, new world No.3 Simona Halep will be keen to build on her fine runner-up finish at Roland Garros while former champ Petra Kvitova and the 2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwanska will be keen to go all the way too, former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka returns to the big time and it will be interesting to watch how Vika fares at The Championships over the next fortnight, the likes of Dominika Cibulkova, the in-form Ana Ivanovic, the fast rising Eugenie Bouchard and last years runner-up Sabine Lisicki, among others, all add to the puzzle.

It appears that we could be in for an interesting tournament once again at Wimbledon in 2014, with such a short grass court season upsets are bound to occur in both the men’s and women’s championships, will we see a first time Grand Slam champion at this year’s event in either the men’s or women’s draw, or will the former champions add to their legacy and add another title to those won previously, buckle up tennis fans because the most famous Grand Slam of them all is about to begin, enjoy! :)
